The thing that still makes me laugh about all of it, in a gallows-humor sort of way, is that I used to write documentation for a certain large tech company's fraud detection services. So I know how these things are supposed to work! In practice, though....they're often a mite flawed.

They do, however, start going FRAUD ALERT FRAUD ALERT WAS THIS YOOOOUUUUU?!?!?!? if I make more than one PlayStation Network purchase in a row. Never fails.

(Moral of that story: stop buying DLC, self. I know. But still.)

But speaking here as a documentation writer…oh, god, I feel your pain.

When it comes to games, I’m willing to read up to a point, and that point is usually, “I’m playing on console, the screen is six feet away, your lore and tutorial text are in minuscule fonts, and my eyes hurt.”

I had a long talk about that one w/my card provider’s fraud department, since I did get the alert about a large transaction, fortunately, even if they didn’t notice it was wildly uncharacteristic. I didn’t even know what the site WAS. Now every time I see their ads, I practically hiss at the screen.

And the consequences ripple out even to people who want nothing to do with it. I had my credit card info stolen last year to run up hundreds of dollars on a sports betting site (and somehow it didn’t get flagged as fraud, which still pisses me off beyond words).

The world lost a genial man, a genius communicator and a supreme artist. I lost a friend - beloved Drew.

Too many people view reading as “something you do” rather than “a skill that can be developed.”

If you want to get better at kicking a football, you have to kick a lot of footballs. If you want to get better at reading, you have to read a lot of books.

Can you put into words what that purpose is? You and the frog have really become icons of this protest. There’s been a nice overall whimsy that has shown up. The frog is amazing. We had a bunch of other inflatable people here last night, too. I saw people playing Twister the other day. What they rely on is fear. So by coming out in an absurdist manner, it speaks to them, to some extent, that we’re actually not that afraid. It also dismantles their narrative a little bit. When they try to describe this situation as “war-torn,” it becomes much harder to take them seriously when they have to post a video saying [U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security] Kristi Noem is up on the balcony staring over the Antifa Army and it’s, like, eight journalists and five protesters and one of them is in a chicken suit.

Reading this anecdote and begging, BEGGING people who are not in creative fields to wrap their brains around the fact that figuring one's way through those stuck transitions *IS THE FUN PART*.

It exists in a particular context, actually! Performa was a line of Macintosh computers back in the '90s.

Allegedly, it’s spelled ‘lede’ to avoid confusion with ‘lead,’ which was the strip of metal that would separate lines of type.

I went to Walgreens in WA for my shot a few weeks ago. They took my word for it it on qualifying conditions (I don’t think it even has to be justified here now), gave me the shot with zero fuss, we had a friendly, funny, understanding chat, and my insurance covered it completely.
