Twice I've found out about guys I knew who were actually perfectly nice to me, but turned out to be horrifically abusive to other women. There's a really unpleasant mental spiral you can end up in that amounts to, "Well, yeah. I wasn't desirable enough to be a target."

Came across the phrase "cognitive DDOS" to describe our present culture.

Understood instantly what it meant.

But having to get work approval for your own side projects that you're never bringing to their table in the first place sure is...uh...

Well, that's something.

Anyway, in general, if the idea's yours, it matters to you, and you know you could make something of it on your own: keep it to yourself. If it's something you're developing under company auspices: yeah, it's theirs, them's the breaks.

Everyone was so irked about the document at large that my boss told everyone on my team, "We're running this up to Legal. DON'T SIGN ANYTHING." And we never did.

Sure would be interesting to know what kind of conditions new employees get handed these days, though.

At one point I was at a company that got bought out by an, um, Very Large Media Company, though, and we got handed some fascinating contracts. I especially enjoyed the section about what we weren't allowed to take off of Studio property, up to and including dead batteries and scrap lumber.

Yeah, I'm used to the "anything you make for the company while working for the company belongs to the company" clauses, although fortunately I was in jobs where this wasn't especially an issue. (Like, I'm not bringing CMS templates home to publish a knockoff website. You can have 'em.)

Depends a lot on the kid, I think. But it does feel like there were more overt scares in kids' movies from that era than you're liable to find in most things that get made now.

I still remember seeing that in the theater as a kid (notable, because we didn't go often) and loving it to absolute bits. It holds up, too!
