It's amazing how many so-called innovations amount to, "I want somebody to do things for me exactly as I tell them, but I don't want to pay anybody, and slavery is annoyingly illegal, so a machine will do."

The difference between the divorced man in question and the man aboard this vehicle:

Los Angeles County declares state of emergency over immigration raids Los Angeles County officials voted on Tuesday to declare a state of emergency over ongoing federal immigration raids.

To be clear:

LA County has declared a state of emergency BECAUSE OF the federal government.

The Feds, LA County is (correctly) saying, have CAUSED the emergency.

This is a striking political moment of internal collapse. Local govts feeling compelled to protect their ppl from … their own govt.

This is cool after the war on everything called β€œporn” by platforms and payment processors. A machine that stole all your words can generate and sell β€œerotica” but you can’t haaa

The thing that still makes me laugh about all of it, in a gallows-humor sort of way, is that I used to write documentation for a certain large tech company's fraud detection services. So I know how these things are supposed to work! In practice, though....they're often a mite flawed.

They do, however, start going FRAUD ALERT FRAUD ALERT WAS THIS YOOOOUUUUU?!?!?!? if I make more than one PlayStation Network purchase in a row. Never fails.

(Moral of that story: stop buying DLC, self. I know. But still.)

When it comes to games, I’m willing to read up to a point, and that point is usually, β€œI’m playing on console, the screen is six feet away, your lore and tutorial text are in minuscule fonts, and my eyes hurt.”

Love how the image is of a Mac Performa circa 1994-ish with the logos removed.

I had a long talk about that one w/my card provider’s fraud department, since I did get the alert about a large transaction, fortunately, even if they didn’t notice it was wildly uncharacteristic. I didn’t even know what the site WAS. Now every time I see their ads, I practically hiss at the screen.

And the consequences ripple out even to people who want nothing to do with it. I had my credit card info stolen last year to run up hundreds of dollars on a sports betting site (and somehow it didn’t get flagged as fraud, which still pisses me off beyond words).

Too many people view reading as β€œsomething you do” rather than β€œa skill that can be developed.”

If you want to get better at kicking a football, you have to kick a lot of footballs. If you want to get better at reading, you have to read a lot of books.

Also, it’s fun to be good at things!

My mom was from Minnesota and would certainly let you know about it, just in very specific contexts. Most of them to do with weather.

(Read: Yes, Mom, I know you had to take your driver's test in the snow. You've said. Many times. Now try parallel parking while going backwards up a hill.)

Can you put into words what that purpose is? You and the frog have really become icons of this protest.

There’s been a nice overall whimsy that has shown up. The frog is amazing. We had a bunch of other inflatable people here last night, too. I saw people playing Twister the other day.

What they rely on is fear. So by coming out in an absurdist manner, it speaks to them, to some extent, that we’re actually not that afraid.

It also dismantles their narrative a little bit. When they try to describe this situation as β€œwar-torn,” it becomes much harder to take them seriously when they have to post a video saying [U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security] Kristi Noem is up on the balcony staring over the Antifa Army and it’s, like, eight journalists and five protesters and one of them is in a chicken suit.

Macintosh Performa 630 and 630CD:Technical Specifications - Apple Support

It exists in a particular context, actually! Performa was a line of Macintosh computers back in the '90s.

(I had the Performa 630 CD. Amazingly, Apple's site still acknowledges its existence: support.apple.com/en-us/112345 )

lede = introductory section in journalism

bury the lede = hiding the most relevant pieces of a story within other distracting information

Allegedly, it’s spelled β€˜lede’ to avoid confusion with β€˜lead,’ which was the strip of metal that would separate lines of type.

I went to Walgreens in WA for my shot a few weeks ago. They took my word for it it on qualifying conditions (I don’t think it even has to be justified here now), gave me the shot with zero fuss, we had a friendly, funny, understanding chat, and my insurance covered it completely.
