Happy Halloween! Here's a fun fact about owls for spooky season. Owls fluoresce pink under UV light. This is due to pigments called porphyrins, and helps researchers age owls. There are more pigments on new feathers, so younger owls glow more uniformly bright pink.

Named for the resemblance of their calls to the sound of saw teeth being sharpened, Northern Saw-whet Owls are small, chestnut-brown owls. They hunt almost entirely at night and return to the same daytime roosts for extended periods and can often be found again on the same perch on subsequent days.

5. Embrace natural materials this fall for festive decorations.

4. Turn off lights at night. Most migratory birds travel at night using celestial cues for navigation. Artificial light can disorient them and expose them to additional hazards.

3. Keep cats indoors. Outdoor cats are the leading cause of bird mortality in the United States, killing up to 4 billion birds every year in the U.S.

2. Decorate your windows. Window decals and decorations on the exterior of the glass can reduce window collisions! Decorate your windows with seasonal decals, or draw custom designs on the outside with a bar of soap.

1. Avoid fake spider webs. These can entangle and trap birds, insects, bats, and other wildlife.

Halloween is fun for us, but it can be spooky for our feathered friends! 👻 Here are a few simple ways to celebrate safely for birds and wildlife.

American Robins are common in almost all habitats and most elevations throughout WA. They are often found in fields, open woodlands, and forest edges, and take advantage of the edges and clearings provided by human development.

This week we participated in the King County Employee Non-profit Expo. It was wonderful to connect with other nonprofits doing vital work in our community, and to talk to folks about birds and local conservation initiatives.

A chunky, medium-sized bird introduced into North America from Eurasia, the Chukar is a pale-colored, but boldly patterned bird. In Washington, cheatgrass and wheat seeds make up the majority of the Chukar's diet. Many of its major food sources, like Chukars, have been introduced from Eurasia.
