University lecturers striking could affect a lot of businesses and organisations that need to hire properly qualified employees, since degrees/qualifications can be delayed in getting awarded to the students. It's just not as direct and immediately apparent.

Many schools in Hamburg have after school (GBS), and a large amount of the pre-school childcare is free/heavily subsidised.

I think this is quite state dependent, for example Hamburg and Schleswig Holstein have quite different provision and childcare subsidy.
