There are a number of questions built-in to the system along with sample data and tests, or you can add your own (or your work can have a library of questions they built).

So I think to answer if it's an effective assessment tool, you really need to know what specifically was being asked.

It also provides an interview environment where you can watch the candidate as they work on problems. So for instance I've used it at work where I give the candidate a problem and ask them to write code to solve it. HackerRank also has other modes like a whiteboard for design questions.

HackerRank is a general platform for doing coding questions. It gives you an editor with support for different languages, and the ability to compile your code and run it against tests.

Is there a specific HackerRank test mentioned? I just see a mention that they used HackerRank in general.
