For a long time I’ve thought that severe traffic injuries and deaths should mean that location is closed to cars - ideally permanently. In the case of Pretti & Good, it’s absolutely the right thing to do. Turn that spot into a garden or park instead.

Muni bus struck and injured a man who died last month after the ambulance in which he was being treated was reportedly blockaded by autonomous vehicles, officials announced Tuesday. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency and the San Francisco Fire Department told The Examiner in a joint statement that the Muni bus was stopped in the westbound lanes of Harrison Street near the intersection of Seventh Street just before 11 p.m. on Aug. 14 when a pedestrian crossed the street and "approached the rear of the bus."

The intersection where a 12-year-old boy was struck and killed by a Muni train Tuesday morning was long ago identified as a high-injury corridor, and city officials know it’s among San Francisco’s most dangerous streets. Andrew Wu, an Aptos Middle School student, was declared dead at the scene in Ingleside. The crash was reported at 8:28 a.m. near the intersection of San Jose and Lakeview avenues. That intersection, according to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, was earmarked for traffic safety improvements last year as part of the program Walk First, but those improvements are not set for completion until the end of 2016.

93-year-old man died Monday from injuries suffered when he was struck by a cable car Sunday while walking in a crosswalk on Mason Street in San Francisco, police said. The collision occurred at 3:10 p.m. near the intersection at Filbert Street, Police Department officials said. The man, whose name was not immediately released, was crossing Mason Street in a marked crosswalk when the southbound cable car hit him, knocking him down and causing serious injury, police said.

Around 3 p.m. on Sept. 13, 2021, San Francisco resident Amy Adams, 41, boarded a 10-car BART train bound for the East Bay. Just before the train departed, though, Adams decided to hop off the train. When she exited the car, her dog, leashed to her backpack, stayed on board. The doors closed, and Adams was dragged down the platform until she struck a gate. She died of multiple blunt force traumas.

💯 fewer cars are the answer. Waymo can help with that. And the technology should be put in the buses + trains.

The woman was first hit by a HUMAN DRIVER and then “popcorned” over the Cruise car. No human driver could have avoided hitting her. The dragging is because the AV co’s were told to get out of the way instead of sitting in intersections when something happens. No one could have predicted that scene.

The National Safety Council (NSC) estimated approximately 44,680 people died in U.S. traffic crashes during 2024, a slight dip (<1%) from 2023, but still a crisis level, with significant spikes in states like Maine, California, and Alaska. For the first half of 2024, deaths were around 20,900, showing little change from the previous year despite increased driving, highlighting the ongoing need for road safety improvements like the Safe System Approach. This summer I was hit while riding a bike in a bright green, parking protected bike lane. There are several deaths that have occurred within yards of that spot. All of them were caused by human drivers.
The acceptable amount of deaths is zero. Waymo is pretty much there. Meanwhile…

Do you know how many beloved pets human drivers kill in San Francisco and the world over? None of it is headline news. Waymo learns from its experience. Humans do not. And even if they did, all other humans do not learn.

Put it in the buses and trains. Have current operators serve as concierges/attendants to help riders get where they are going, elderly/disabled with boarding, etc..
Registration, Parking of human driven cars should cost a jillion dollars and that should be enough to pay for excellent 24/7 transit.

Pretty much the same issue. If cars aren’t moving - we are safer. If they do need to move, I want it to be Waymo rather than the typical driver.

That human driving is unsafe? You betcha. Looking forward to it going the way of the horse & carriage.

Human jobs over human lives? Yikes. I’d rather live.

Are you also mourning the loss of the typing pool, elevator operators, fax machine repair workers, phone operators, etc??
There will always be *something* to be done. Slaying your fellow humans should not be part of that.

Human driven cars kill over 40,000 people every year in the USA alone. I don’t think that really qualifies as things “working”.
