Ten years is a long time for any PM.

Back in the day, the Arri Alexa Mini was left off the list because it couldn’t record true 4K, only 3.2K. Now Arri has many cameras on the approved list.

RED was the first 4K camera that was suitable for production, but I rarely see them on set anymore.

The Netflix “look” largely comes from lighting decisions on set and post-production colouring, both stylistic choices that have nothing to do with camera selection.

Some of it will also have to do with the quality of Netflix streaming, but I will leave that for others who are more knowledgeable.

Though the Netflix approved camera list is quite large, most features & shows are shot on an Arri Alexa Mini LF, Arri Alexa 35, or a Sony Venice 2 because they have flexible production workflows and great sensors.

The expense of filming is not the cameras. It is the crew, talent, and locations.

There are more than 50 Netflix approved cameras from Arri, Sony, RED, Panavision, Panasonic, Blackmagic and Canon.

They all have different “looks” and come in a wide range of sizes, and price ranges.

Some of those cameras are less than $7,000 and some are more than $70,000 without accessories.

I’m a Digital Image Technician working on film sets and TV shows.

The Netflix “look” has a lot less to do with the list of approved cameras than it used to before covid.

Back then, many cameras could not shoot in UHD 10-bit 4:2:2, so minimum requirements were more relevant.
