Windsor Yards Regeneration Cabinet to consider sale of Windsor Yards freehold to unlock town centre regeneration

The Partnership Cabinet of Liberal Democrat and Independent members will consider the proposed sale of RBWM’s freehold interest in the Windsor Yards shopping centre on 30th April, in a deal that would break the stalemate of the existing agreement.

The delay of so many local elections is a disgraceful stitch-up between Labour and the Conservatives.

Where elections are still happening, the Liberal Democrats will campaign hard to build on last year’s historic election wins and give communities the strong voice they deserve.

Thames Water also need to get a grip of sewage releases and pipe leaks in RBWM - we need a proper structural solution so the public service can operate and deliver water services properly.

Bus companies are cancelling school routes in our area as they are not financially viable. We end up with even more cars clogging up our school roads.

What does it mean for you?
- Increase in council tax – tough decision, but the alternative, declaring bankruptcy, would be worse for residents.
- If approved, RBWM households will still pay less than their equivalents in neighbouring councils.
- Support will be available for those most in need.

What are we doing about it?
- Improved governance, control, transformation plan, spending control panel and reporting
- Prepared and approved a detailed recovery plan that’s been independently validated
- Asking Government for a loan and approval to raise council tax.

Who was responsible?
- Previous Conservative administrations – it was their decisions to keep council tax low and sign up to poor deals including racking up £230m of debt – debt alone is now costing us all £19m a year to service.

Why has it happened?
- Short term decisions from past Conservative administrations reduced income and increased costs, now compounded by unprecedented demand for statutory support services for the most vulnerable.

What’s the situation?
- The Council is on the verge of effective bankruptcy – and has been for several years – only us having discussions with Government are saving us from being forced to declare it.
