It's wise to keep desired scope in mind... I think you could make the scope much more manageable if you condensed it to a neighborhood instead of a whole city, idk if that works for your game though

i think i agree, my problem is that i dont want to do cartography and my drawing "skills" are not intelligible to other people; it's a big blind spot in my skillset

I typically have them make saves vs death every round (combat) or every turn (exploration) to not die until they receive some kind of healing. works well for me in bx / od&d kinds of games
