The Salt Lake Tribune will drop its paywall next year, CEO tells donors at NewsMakers gala
After years of requiring people to pay for online news content, The Tribune announced an upcoming change during its 2025 annual NewsMakers Gala.
The Salt Lake Tribune, which went from for-profit to non-profit 6 years ago, is about to drop its paywall. "The Tribune cannot afford to limit who has access to independent and trusted news."
Meanwhile, it just launched a new newspaper in southern Utah.

"Here’s what we don’t say out loud: There’s no money in journalism anymore. No fame, no glamour, no prestige. But there’s lots and lots of money in media—in being a brand, an influencer, a personality. We stopped paying journalists and started rewarding performers."

Moral rot in elite journalism is killing the whole field
The Nuzzi/RFK Jr. mess and the revelation of Epstein’s journo pals lay bare a profound moral absence at the heart of our free press.
'What are young and/or struggling journalists supposed to think when the most successful people in the business are the ones with malleable ethics and poor judgement (and, to be honest, pretty bad writers)?'

I was recently laid off by ARTnews, a few days before the theft at the Louvre. The terms of my TN work visa means I can't freelance unless I donate the funds to charity. I'm open to new FT roles in business reporting and communications, and am willing to relocate to other cities, including Toronto.

Texas heat has overstayed its welcome, and could break a record soon. What’s causing it?
There’s some exciting news for fall lovers, though: Change is coming.
If a low in the 50s still hasn’t arrived by Thursday – which is not predicted in the forecast – this year will see the latest arrival of the fall chill ever recorded.

Someone recently asked: “Why [aren’t] Mississippians in particular no longer passing on farming knowledge?”
My response: They are, and here are some of the Black farmers who are training up the next generation in the Mississippi Delta.
