What I don’t really understand is how abolishing some jury trials will save much money or time. I can see some savings in jury administration costs but a trial will still involve the same elements (opening speech, evidence, legal arguments, etc). Where do significant savings come from?

Can’t you conceive of the possibility that some people have more progressive values than the current leadership? Writing it off as virtue signalling is too easy and dismissive. And will lead to significant losses at the next election.
