I feel like the sheer number of layoffs happening this week should cause some prestige outlet to publish an β€œAre we entering a recession?” article. But apparently pattern recognition isn’t allowed anymore in major newsrooms.

I'm pretty sure if I met my dad's cousin, he would introduce them as "This is my cousin, idk what that makes her to you, probably like an aunt or something." Not even in an immigrant community "great respect for your elders" kind of way, but just as practical need to create some shorthand around it.

I imagine that this is characteristic of the weird blindness that megachurch goers have to the broader church environment. My church growing up published its YTD revenues/expenses weekly in the bulletin, and it approached $100M. Totally thought that was a normal way for a church to operate

However, some experts who claim to have spoken with the spirit of Orrin Hatch say he doesn't think this is a violation of the law that bears his name. Others note the act is named for Carl Hatch, a New Mexico senator who served well before Orrin.
Nevertheless, an expert consensus has not yet formed

It so crazy to see this kind of thing immediately juxtaposed against conservatives griping about how we need to increase birth rates. Seems clear that having kids might entail some folks needing food assistance.

Someone who thinks about a question all day long is going to be better at articulating it in a debate than a lay person. That doesn't inherently mean the lay person is wrong/needs to change their mind.

Not necessarily,I think. For instance: Person A is an outsider to the field that encompasses X. B is an insider to that field, and believes not-X, which is contrary to the consensus of experts. You can believe the position of the consensus, even if you can't articulate that position as well as B can

I'm thinking these guys in Philly in 1787, trying to piece together compromises between lots of drinking and sweating their ass off might not have written a divinely inspired, infallible Constitution. Has anyone considered this?

But of course impeachment is pretty much a dead letter when Congress is narrowly divided and highly polarized. There's an implicit "The military should refuse unlawful orders", but that clearly isn't happening.

So, then, why bother saying Congress has the sole authority to declare war?

24.10.2025 18:54 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Seems like pretty bad constitutional design that the President can tell the military to do war-like actions outside of a war. We're getting to (already at?) the point where retaliation by COL/VEN is justified, which would force Congress to declare war. The sole sanction for this is impeachment, yes?

I keep seeing libs on here make comments wrt the White House East Wing like "He's destroying the people's house to build himself a palace."

The White House has always been a palace. We have weird feelings about that word, so we don't use it. But it is a palace in every sense of the word.

The sheer level of spiritual rottenness this displays is astounding. You are President of the United States. Congress/SCOTUS doesn't stop anything you do. You are already a billionaire. Best case, you have a decade left to live. What can $230 million dollars possibly even do for you?

This place calls itself "The premier life skills university," but everyone (>6 people) from my HS class who went here immediately moved back in with their parents and landed in the family company. Training for life skills specifically and uniquely means not having everything on a silver platter.

No kid should ever have to protest or advocate for their friends’ basic humanity.

But they’re standing up at No Kings anyway.
