There will always be mass amounts of people who feel that Other People Doing Normal and Essential Things For Them, either for free or at an extremely low cost, is something they innately deserve. And when the people they demand this labour from say no, it’s a violation of their human rights.

And the mentality has never truly gone away! Unpaid labour is still demanded and expected, particularly from women, all the time. People act like they are divinely entitled to the labour of a deeply underpaid personal Meal Courier multiple times per week through delivery apps. The list goes on.

I often think about how the vast majority of human societies throughout history just accepted slavery as a part of life. As a species, we were overwhelmingly way too chill about it for way longer than anyone should be comfortable with. I don’t love what that says about us a whole.

It’s particularly egregious seeing the loudest voices criticising her being other women. Nothing was learned from Depp v Heard, nobody cares, everyone is twelve years old.

People are talking about Blake Lively again and I am once again reminded that being deemed somewhat annoying/unlikeable/arrogant as a woman is, to many people, on the same level as a man being a serial killer.

1) The Poppy War trilogy
2) Katabasis
3) Yellowface
4) Babel

Babel, which I liked for the most part, is far and away the worst offender for this. Katabasis was a big improvement.

I will continue to read whatever RF Kuang comes out with but I really do believe that The Poppy War trilogy remains her best work by quite a substantial margin. She’s at her best when she doesn’t spell out for the reader why whatever is currently happening in the novel is Bad, Actually.

Going in completely blind to a screening of Oldboy a few years ago was genuinely one of the most insane experiences I’ve ever had in a cinema.
