Aging is NOT a problem to solve or a disease to cure.
AGING IS LIVING.
Yes, we become dependent last 2 years of our lives, but we LIVE 25+ yrs ready to give back and enjoy live.
Cities should make living Older, Healthier, Happier, the easy choice. Sadly, most are doing nothing!

Trails along the waterfronts are God given. All should be PUBLIC, along rivers, lakes, oceans. God's gift!
Working in Brisbane I ran into many olders who walk, run, bike, chat, shop. Health & Happiness.
This Sep. I'll be keynoting Australia's Transport Conference, TPA's. Joyful.

Canada's superb Olympic Men's Hockey team in Milano.
How do they get around the city?
Walking and using public transit, of course.
A civilized city is NOT where the poor have cars; it's where the rich use public transit. (E.P.)
Milano seems to be pretty civilized. Nice!!

“There’s absolutely no reason NYC can’t achieve Mamdani’s plan for more people- and transit-friendly streets."
He wants to pedestrianize ‘vast swaths’ of the new congestion pricing zone, along with streets near public open space and schools.

'Honolulu's streets are car sewers designed to maximize vehicle traffic with little consideration for active modes."
Huge opp. flat, great weather, wide streets...wasted!
Could be active travel paradise... pedestrian promenades, urban villages, safe bikelanes...

Most olders are independent, active, glad to contribute.
Walking the Camino de Santiago, Spain, met this older man working on his land, as some of his previous generations. Tradition. Pride. Joy.
Olders should be able / promoted to do what they feel is best. Healthier & Happier.

Thanks for sharing, Christie. Lovely story and image. Streets are PUBLIC SPACE and should have different uses according to time of day, day of week, week of year.
Joyful dancing in the public space, our space, everyone's place.

Public spaces are EQUALIZERS. Everyone belongs.
I love working in Chile. In parks, multigeneration users.
They have lovely name for adultos mayores (older adults): adultos mejores (BETTER ADULTS).
As in most countries, more men than women in parks. Big issue. Why? Programs? Design? Other?

Working in Helsinki, Finland, enjoyed frozen lake with people of all ages having fun.
At -31C / -24F this older man stopped his bike ride to chat with me. In the middle of the lake a grandfather played with toddler, skating.

Toronto's projected growth: housing that is bad for equity, sustainability, fun.
NOT single family housing or gigantic towers. Better!
SAME # units in 6 floors next to each other than 50 fl each other block.
What if allow on ALL arterials 6 to 12 floors? Allow 4 in single fam. H?

Working in Copenhagen & Odense, Denmark, I visited a lovely summer camp for grandparents & grandchildren, 4 nights. Magnificent.
Cities need policies, infra, programs that strengthen the magical bond of grand & great-grandparents with children. Win-win.

26 years ago my brother Enrique as mayor, created the CAR-FREE DAY in Bogotá, citywide, 8m pp
After first one, car people upset, it's never easy. There was a referendum & over 2/3 in favor! This is why it continues, most residents love it!

A NEW world, a multigenerational lifestyle, everywhere.
ALL countries have more than doubled life expectancy since 1900.
Now it's common for children to enjoy grand & great grandparents!
Playgrounds should have cozy areas for olders.
Both: better physical, mental, social health.

Dance in public spaces; who cares? Enjoy!
It seems to be one of many benefits of olders, not to care much about what others think or say. Just do it!
Love Buenos Aires. When working there, run into olders dancing tango in sidewalks , parks.
They've done a lovely micro-centro.

Olders (till death-2) are mostly independent & eager to collaborate.
Working in small Canadian city, Amherstburg ON, enjoyed chat w. adults & olders creating & maintaining lovely park garden.

As we are living much longer, everywhere...
there is time to do what we've always wanted but did not, for xyz reason.
Olders should do what they want, and not care what anyone thinks.
There is nothing someone should not be allowed to do, because of age.
Older, Healthier, Happier.

OBESITY in Older Adults: more than doubled past 30 yrs. From 18% to 40%. Crisis!!
Decreases quality of life and causes death many years earlier than non-obese people.
Obesity increases heart attacks, osteoporosis, Alzheimer, strokes, depression, anxiety, more.
