Just found out that Ariadne Oliver, Agatha Christie's mystery novelist character, has a book called "The Affair of the Second Goldfish." German must have a word for when you want to read a book, but its existence is purely fictional.

It feels like he's perpetuating the idea that there's a clean, unbroken line between ancient Greco-Roman sources and British civilization, but that Jewish, North African, Iberian sources are strange outliers that we should only pay attention to for a dose of novelty.

Herodotus and Ovid aren't writing in English, so how come they didn't get Greek or Italian accents, if he felt compelled to do a voice for a "Moorish Jew," as ibn Yaqub is described in the text?

Is this weird? I just started a nonfiction popular history audiobook. When quoting people like Herodotus and Ovid, the narrator used the same (British) accent as for the rest of the text. But when quoting Ibrahim ibn Yaqub, suddenly he started putting on a foreign accent.
