The Three Ravens, c. 1885, by Edward Frederick Brewtnall. The painting captures a moment of sorrow and stillness in a pastoral landscape, illustrating the seventeenth-century English folk poem of the same name. The scene is set at twilight, with a stream running through a grassy field. Three ominous black ravens are perched on the bare branches of an old tree, silhouetted against the setting sun. Below the tree, the lifeless body of a knight lies supine in the meadow. A faithful dog guards the knight's corpse. A woman (described as a "fallow doe" in the poem, a metaphor for the knight's lover) weeps over the body, her grief evident as she cradles him beside the dog.
