It used to take one really cool person to introduce you to them usually with "this was Cobains favourite band" then you'd slowly find other people who liked them too. If they were huge then my wife wouldn't have had to lie to me that she'd heard of them when we met.

It's basic politeness to refer to someone how they prefer to be referred to. It's the easiest thing in the world to do. Yes, you might slip up a few times if something's changed but just correct yourself.
