if he ever complained about something, i would say sorry and then mention that not having those issues is one of the upsides of doing it himself. eventually he started doing it with me just checking to make sure he was going through the steps, and then one day he was doing it on his own.

my (apparently successful) strategy for all toilet related parenting was to not be in a hurry. for wiping, this meant i did it for him for a while even when he used the toilet, and i just narrated so he would learn a bit.
