I love micro budget silents that forged art out of scraps and the racism of the era meant that studios catering to Black audiences were cut off from traditional funding sources. They had to make every hard-won penny count and they usually did so by hiring charismatic performers.

One of the hardest things to wrap one’s mind around is that these dudes can write this shit utterly convinced that they’re not having an emotion.

The common threads I keep seeing in all anti-democratic American factions are these:

1.) Civil society will always be there, regardless of how badly we neglect or abuse it.

2.) Sincere conviction is cringe.
