Worth also highlighting that keeping packages up to date takes resource - resource that often isnโ€™t given by senior managers because they donโ€™t even understand what CRAN is, or the value of packaging up code, functional programming etc etc. I could go on.

Universities urged to hasten โ€˜quiet retreatโ€™ from X after Grok outcry - Research Professional News Fresh analysis shows increasing numbers of UK universities going silent on Elon Muskโ€™s platform

โ€œGrokโ€™s Nazi turn wasnโ€™t a glitchโ€“it was the direct result of Muskโ€™s determination to use X as a platform to promote his far-right politics. No excuse for any university to be funnelling money or clicks his way."

PNAS just asked me to order reprints for our recent commentary. For fun, I thought I'd see how much they cost.

25 printsโ€”of just one page, mind youโ€”646 USD. And then they have the temerity to charge 160 USD for shipping.

The for-profit publishers will take all we let them. Choose other journals.

We are At War now, according to President Bush, and I take him at his word. He also says this War might last for "a very long time."
Generals and military scholars will tell you that eight or 10 years is actually not such a long time in the span of human history - which is no doubt true - but history also tells us that 10 years of martial law and a wartime economy are going to feel like a Lifetime to people who are in their twenties today. The poor bastards of what will forever be known as Generation Z are doomed to be the first generation of Americans who will grow up with a lower standard of living than their parents enjoyed.
That is extremely heavy news, and it will take a while for it to sink in. The 22 babies born in New York City while the World Trade Center burned will never know what they missed. The last half of the 20th century will seem like a wild party for rich kids, compared to what's coming now. The party's over, folks.

Absolutely ludicrous narrative.

Nobody sends their kids to private schools out of some altruistic instinct.

And moreover all the schools that are closing seem to have been struggling already.

When independent schools closed under the Tories nobody blamed the government

And politically stupid, too. Alienates core vote (& they do have places to go) in pursuit of votes he'll rarely get, & demolishes his core policy agenda of growth, making his re-election more unlikely. Even those (inc. me) willing to cut him a lot of slack feel betrayed. A truly awful day for UK.

Tighter restrictions on visas arenโ€™t just mean-spirited, theyโ€™re counter-productive Making it harder for people to come to this country to work, study or stay may get the immigration numbers down, but itโ€™s also a one-way ticket to plummeting growth, argues Jonathan Portes

"Making it harder for people to come here to work, study or stay here may โ€œget immigration downโ€ but will also โ€œget growth downโ€.

Prioritising the former is a bet voters prefer fewer foreign students/workers even if means closed universities and care homes.
