i find it helpful that people get so insane about this. i use llms professionally, and the pull of anthropomorphisation is incredible - but it's much easier to dismiss the premises of an argument when you've seen its incorrect conclusion.

what did they mean by pure fantasy? something like what we'd call high fantasy today, or perhaps the presence of magic that didn't claim to be scientific?

The Steam Autumn Sale is on. Last week I played Murders on the Yangtze River, a detective game set in China in the early 1900s. It's a phenomenal indie Phoenix Wright-like that I think you should absolutely play and it's 35% off: store.steampowered.com/app/1746030/... /cc @spacetwinks.bsky.social

for example, in a parliamentary system the elected legislators wouldn't be able to passively abdicate control. if the cabinet *are* members of the legislature, they're answerable to each other and their constituents.

that's accidental! i was trying to have it vaguely sorted by release date, without crossing any lines. however, i do think there's a weak relationship between those things - newer entries have tended toward more complex information-retrieval as developers riff on it
24.09.2025 17:25 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
you're right, it does; for example, outer wilds has great investigation with a similar "insert knowledge to progress" mechanism. however, i think the static part of it does contribute to a coherent sense of genre. there's something about viewing the mystery from "outside" that can be really engaging
24.09.2025 13:56 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
i think that *limiting* it to some "investigate/solve" combo may be the core - for example, something like Daemon Masquerade has pretty similar deduction mechanics, but ends up feeling more like an adventure game or VN just because you have a protagonist character who's actively involved in the plot
24.09.2025 13:51 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
we'd need telepathy (or a lot of interviews) to know the direct inspirations, but it's fun to try and find the bones of the genre regardless
24.09.2025 13:51 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
also a great game - i'm not sure why it didn't pop into my head when considering about this taxonomy. i'll go and think about how it might fit in!

I think this highlights the main issue I have with the social media ban... the algorithm is bad for everyone. It's cooking brains across the globe. Rather than addressing that, they've decided the only solution is to cut off a small section of the population for a few years
