I think I had a Pentium 233 and later got a Voodoo 2.

I remember thinking the same. The software renderer had a crispness to it, whereas the hardware accelerated stuff was quite blurry? And if I remember, they had coloured lighting in their software renderer, which was a big deal. Memories!
