Congratulations British law makers! You have saved children from that most pernicious threat; a free online encyclopedia staffed by volunteers.

Part of the problem for Labour is when they try and strike a tough pose it is just tragi-comic like this.

I fall very much in the “on the level of the abstract I very much agree with this and on the level of actually existing political reality, are you fucking nuts?” camp here

First encountered him via the Garden State soundtrack (“Such Great Heights”). Even his covers are brilliant.

Panels one and two:
Two white mice make their way through a maze.

Panel three:
Having completed the maze, the two mice are rewarded with some fruit. Two scientists watch them. One says:
“Poor little things: all that thought and effort just to earn themselves a little treat.”

The second scientist looks at a clock and says: “Coffee time!”

Panels four and five:
The two scientists make their way through a maze of corridors to a door marked “Canteen”

Panel six:
The scientists look at the food on offer. One says: “Ooh, Donuts!”

Science fiction is great at short stories, which should suit young modern readers and let them discover what style they like. This was the anthology that got me started (in 1965). Intro discussion between CS Lewis, Robert Conquest and Kingsley Bleeding Amis…! (Newer anthologies are available.)

@gralefrit.bsky.social You have to see these! A friend of mine has been collating a series of images entitled "Things my students have written turned into Philomena Cunk quotes" and they're just glorious.

In the next election the Democrats can only be the anti-MAGA party. But they have to have positions that allow a broad enough swathe of people to vote for them. And the biggest test they have to pass will be the question “What Trump/MAGA policies will you change?”. Not as easy as it sounds.

Reading the news this morning was a mistake. I think the best thing any human being can do is to continue to try to be a good person and always do the right thing even - especially - in a world where, increasingly, there is no reward for doing so. All we ever have is our integrity.

Texas forbids law that keeps guns away from unhinged people Despite recent massacres in the state, GOP leaders ban a proven tool to help stop them.

Starting in September, Gov. Greg Abbott and GOP lawmakers will make it even harder in Texas to prevent school shootings, suicides, and murders by domestic abusers www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Also my hot take is Frog Chours/We All Stand Together is the perfect peaceful mass protest song (right sentiment, easy to sing, easy to learn, fun to do as a crowd) and i'm constantly amazed no one does so.

I think much of the English right built their identity on Brexit, which they never believed in their wildest dreams would happen, but when they got it they realised it solved absolutely nothing, left them bereft of ideas and office, and now they’re thinking, “ah, f—k it, let’s try revolution.”

Brexit was an attempted counter-revolution against many of the changes this country has gone through since 1945. It has turned out to be a failure with elements of farce. This has driven many people on the Right completely mad.
