While Liars wasn't as popular in the mainstream as the Strokes or the White Stripes, it felt like in indie circles it was just as acclaimed. Another one that you maybe had to be there for and is now forgotten.

I understand the frustration, but I think it's reflecting the broader tastes of the people nominating. Indie rock is my preferred genre and most of my favorites within that also weren't nominated (Burning Airlines! Califone! American Analog Set! Les Savy Fav!) because they are niche indie records.

Strongly disagree. Think that album is a great example of a band without a particular original sound who writes really good songs. Guess I'll have to write a DC to try to persuade!

No fun is a strange criticism for Super Furry Animals.

Pinback’s self-titled didn’t make it in 99 either. Sadly this groups doesn’t seem to rate them highly.

Doesn’t sound ridiculous at all. After a few tournaments, the nomination phase became my favorite part (over the actual tournament). Feel like I discover more new albums during this part of the process (and the discussion is 99% positive, versus the tournament when people get negative).

I have to assume CHANGE will be in given how highly seeded EMERGENCY & I was. I will definitely be writing a DC for it if it's in.

Since you have Jimmy Eat World, Blink-182 and Sum 41, can I interest you in Hey Mercedes, Saves the Day, Hot Water Music, or New End Original?

Sorry I missed it. I guess at least 2 of us will be nominating them!

Juno - A Future Lived in Past Tense

Juno was such a great band. Love this album too. I believe it's only available on YouTube, but hope others check it out. The opening track (uncharacteristically an instrumental) might be my favorite.

Haven't seen anyone post about Pinback's BLUE SCREEN LIFE, so would encourage people to give it a listen (especially since their first album missed the cut in the 99 tournament). Dense, hypnotic arrangements, catchy melodies, great harmonizing, and affecting lyrics. Hoping they qualify this time!

THE TYRANNY OF DISTANCE is my favorite Ted Leo album. Hoping it makes it in.

GO FORTH is easily my favorite proper Les Savy Fav album (exempting the ROME EP and the INCHES compilation)

During the nomination period I'm plan to highlight albums I think will be on the qualification bubble. Today, that's Burning Airlines, IDENTIKIT. If you enjoyed Jawbox in the 90s brackets, you'll enjoy this. Nobody does muscular, math-y, discordant, yet catchy punk rock better than J Robbins.

Would throw out Jim O'Rourke's INSIGNICANCE as fun indie. Unfortunately, it's only on YouTube, so I'm not sure how many people will check it out, but it's one of my favorites from 2001. Punchy, well-composed rock songs (with the best sounding drums) paired with funny, cutting lyrics.

I love Electrelane's two albums with vocals (2004's THE POWER OUT and 2007's NO SHOUTS, NO CALLS) but the more instrumental records like ROCK IT TO THE MOON don't do much for me.

While WONDERLAND isn't as good their 90s albums I still enjoy it and appreciate that it was a change of pace from the classic rock of US AND US ONLY. I think the drop off starts after this (I couldn't remember whether UP AT THE LAKE or SIMPATICO came next, but neither are particularly strong).

Yeah, β€œSeries of Dreams” is better than anything that ended up on OH MERCY (and I do like the record).

I haven't listened to EMPIRE BURLESQUE in awhile, but my memory is that's the low point production-wise. Really awful stuff.

Have you listened to album MONO that Westerberg put out under the alias Grandpaboy? It's really great - it was originally released as a companion piece to his solo album STEREO (which I think is pretty good), but easily bests it, and is my favorite post-Replacements record of his. Highly recommend.

With 4 choices, the ability to see the results and then change your pick, could create some interesting dynamics later in the day. If your choice is a distant 3rd or 4th, may we as well switch.

But it would at least give us the occasion to note that HOT IN THE SHADE:
- has a song co-written with Michael Bolton
- is another album (along with PUMP) that has Desmond Child co-writes
