it was a plan to consolidate multiple tax credit allocation committees by (then) State Controller Betty Yee and, yes, Treasurer Fiona Ma derailed it. Wont happen if Betty Yee is our next governor.

04.08.2025 14:58 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Arenโt they talking about the state legislature approving a state ballot measure that would gerrymander the congressional map? I donโt think it has anything to do specifically with state legislative redistricting or election systems, does it?
04.08.2025 05:24 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0For congressional districts yes, but Iโm talking about the state legislature.
04.08.2025 05:15 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0My advice to @votealexlee.bsky.social is this: propose that in exchange for gerrymandering all of our congressional districts for Dems, we transition the state legislature to a nearly gerrymandering-proof system like multi-member proportional districts. So we never have talk about โfair mapsโ again.

Screenshot of a podcast episode titled โThe NYC Landlords Most Worriedโฆโ from the Odd Lots podcast series. The screen shows a highlighted quote from the episode: โI always really like talking to Ben. I had not realized the sort of, I mean, there was a lot there that was interesting, that sort of, that source of the disparity in property taxes. It makes a lot of sense that if you just canโt raise property taxes at a certain clip, how, you know, relatively undertaxed, any sort of booming neighborhood, such as Williamsburg will inevitably end up being. Yeah, that seems like a problem, given that like a big chunk of the recent story of New York City is gentrification and all these neighborhoods where like a warehouse that used to cost, I donโt know, 100,000 in the 80s now costs like 10 million or whatever.โ
Whatโs been going on in California for nearly 50 years should blow these peopleโs minds.

30.07.2025 06:16 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0What I mentioned is not hypothetical, itโs the primary thing allowed under San Franciscoโs Residential Unit Conversion and Demolition Ordinance under Chapterโฏ41A of the San Francisco Administrative Code. Specifically it protects any unit occupied by a tenant within the last 7 years.
30.07.2025 01:17 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 1Not sure if this is the comment you refer to but what if the โrebuilt unitsโ replaced by multiple units started as a single family detached home that was sold by an owner-occupier and hasnโt been occupied by a tenant for several years?
30.07.2025 01:08 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Free rent promos (reduced amortized cost over the lease period) are technically an example of lower housing prices. Or maybe by โhouse pricesโ you mean specifically sale prices of detached single family homes? Then weโre really not comparing the same things.
30.07.2025 00:52 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0We have them split too (though we donโt really do anything with that data like tax them at different rates) but the assessments are based on โprop 13 base year assessmentsโ, yes.

29.07.2025 18:13 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0And you can completely disregard profits here... If sales of your patented product don't generate profit margins high enough to cover the tax then did you really need a patent?
28.07.2025 20:51 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0So this should end up being more like a gross receipts tax for the patented products. Maybe 5% on the first $5M in revenue then 10% on the next $10M, etc... ratchet it up until you top out at 50% for revenue over $500M ?
28.07.2025 20:50 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0QT because I can't reply, but the right way to tax patents (I think) is to have a progressive tax on the annual revenue generated by the product that is patented. Assessing the "overall patent value" is going to be hard but with product sales there are literal receipts.
28.07.2025 20:47 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Reasonable how? Like split-rate with higher taxes on land value rather than improvements?
