I meet new MPs all the time and I am constantly astonished by the careers they describe pre-politics, the specialist knowledge and what they gave up to be in Parliament. Yes, there are a handful of hopeless wrong uns. But pick one out of a hat and you find a serious, committed person 9/10 times.

Note from the editors:
ProPublica is publishing the names of the two federal immigration agents involved in the fatal shooting of Minnesota protester Alex Pretti. We believe there are few investigations that deserve more sunlight and public scrutiny than this one, in which two masked agents fired 10 shots at Pretti as he lay on the ground after being pepper-sprayed.
The Department of Justice said it is investigating the incident, but the names of the two agents have been withheld from Congress and from state and local law enforcement.
The policy of shielding officersβ identities, particularly after a public shooting, is a stark departure from standard law enforcement protocols, according to lawmakers, state attorneys general and former federal officials. Such secrecy, in our view, deprives the public of the most fundamental tool for accountability.

my increasingly curmudgeonly take is that we all, in fact, have responsibilities. politics isn't an arena for self-actualization. it's an arena for public service. this is as true of voters as it is of politicians.

this is a lie. splitting DHS funding from the broader bill is what we wanted. itβs thune who caved.
you have a substantial platform with a lot of influence. please donβt use it to spread things that are untrue, and also demotivating at a time when we desperately need encouragement.

a lot of american jews have convinced themselves that the existence and expression of palestinian identity is itself inherently antisemitic.
this is extremely fucking racist and i don't really know what to do about it.

I just want to say: there are many ways out of this, but the most likely one is: mitigate harms and save as many lives as possible, while winning elections in the face of vote suppression, then using power ruthlessly to repair our systems.
It may not be that likely. Itβs just the most likely.

There are many tactics Republicans can & may employ to try to depress voter turnout and intimidate voters. That said, voter turnout can also be depressed by people preemptively declaring the election is rigged. It takes effort to get to the polls, it doesn't help to tell people it's not worth it.

One of my more controversial opinions is that the US needs to significantly raise taxes to the tune of a couple % of GDP right now, even before any expansive social democratic reforms, and that means youβyes you, dear highly educated professionalβwill need to pay up, not just nebulous billionaires.

I think it's reasonable for a Jewish person to feel fear at the phrase "globalize the intifada," and also reasonable for a Palestine solidarity supporter to mean something entirely innocuous. Same with "Zionism" to mean "the general idea of Jewish self-determination in the land" and "the Nakba"
