When Disrespect Becomes Policy: How Government Neglect Sparked Labour Unrest As Albertans brace for the first teacher strike in nearly 25 years, a new opinion piece on Parklandโ€™s blog gives a frontline perspective on the governmentโ€™s long war against public education.

Want to learn more about why teachers are striking in Alberta? Read @iandoktor.bsky.social to learn how Alberta Government went from having to convince 12% of teachers to sign up for their deal to now 90% of teachers voting against the governments deal www.parklandinstitute.ca/disrespect

Since itโ€™s a ministerial order they canโ€™t refuse, but theyโ€™ve been accused by the premier of โ€œvicious complianceโ€, so theyโ€™re not without some form of protest against it

Itโ€™s not the school boardโ€™s decision, itโ€™s because of a Ministerial Order penned by Minister of Education Demetrios Nicolaides of the United Conservative Party and supported (and defended) by Premier Danielle Smith. The school boards and teachersโ€™ union are universally opposed to the ban.

A tweet by Margaret Atwood that reads: Here's a piece of literature by me, suitable for seventeen-year-olds in Alberta schools, unlike -- we are told -- The Handmaid's Tale. (Sorry, kids; your Minister of Education thinks you are stupid babies.)

John and Mary were both very, very good children. They never picked their noses or had bowel movements or zits. They grew up and married each other, and produced five perfect children without ever having sex. Although they claimed to be Christian, they paid no attention to what Jesus actually said about the poor and the Good Samaritan and forgiving your enemies and such; instead, they practised selfish rapacious capitalism, because they worshipped Ayn Rand. (Though they ignored the scene in The Fountainhead where โ€œwelcomed rapeโ€ is advocated, because who wants to dwell, and also that would have involved sex and would de facto be pornographic. Well, it kind of is, eh?) Oh, and they never died, because who wants to dwell on, you know, death and corpses and yuk? So they lived happily ever after. But while they were doing that The Handmaidโ€™s Tale came true and Danielle Smith found herself with a nice new blue dress but no job. The end.

Rob Breakenridge: Less focus on Ottawa and more on the books, please This government needs to focus as much on its own massive spending as it does picking fights over 'sovereignty.'

New rule. A parent may only propose removing a book from the school library only after reading it in its entirety and delivering a book report to the librarian. Until then no discussion shall be entered into.
