The 6 Mistakes You’re Going to Make as a New Manager Transitioning from an individual contributor to a manager is tough but rewarding. The key is to delegate, find new sources of fulfillment, focus on quality over quantity, maintain proper engagement…

If you're a new manager, or about to become one, these insights are for you.

I realized that many of the mistakes I've made during my transition into management are very common, and that's why I decided to write this down.

There's a lot of talk about Canada Geese and whether they're good and my answer is Yes.

What's Up In Workload Identity - November 2024 SPIFFE? WIMSE? All that and more inside the November edition of What's Up in Workload Identity.

Hey folks, β€”Β In case you are into workload identity news (I know, "very niche" topic), you might want to check out the November edition of "What's Up in Workload Identity:
workloadidentity.news/p/whats-up-i...

This edition highlights SPIKE, a SPIFFE-first Secrets Management solution.

Basically it's translating a broad user auth token issued and validated online by an IdP into a new token that can be validated offline by anything that can validate a SPIFFE SVID.

Netflix built a much simpler system with E2E tokens that seemed to scale really well.

The implementation proposed here was only ever a POC, but there's a SPIFFE SIG pushing on the concept.

Doing this safely (ie. without passing around broadly scooped user bearer tokens) isn't easy though.

Here's a write up with more context docs.google.com/document/d/1...

We spent a while looking into this when exploring delegated identity for SPIFFE. In practice nesting identity for every service call is hard on impl. and perf. and encourages brittle authz policies. Usually identity of last service and initial user is all you need.

Elon Musk posting Dune quote, β€œRespect for the truth comes close to the basis for all morality”

The full quote, which Musk cuts off, is perfectly ironic:

β€œMy father once told me that respect for the truth comes close to being the basis for all morality. β€˜Something cannot emerge from nothing,’ he said. This is profound thinking if you understand how unstable β€˜the truth’ can be.”

The goal of #kubernetes was to establish an interface for cloud vendors to efficiently binpack customer workloads at scale.

It was never about simplifying infrastructure or creating a portable abstraction.

Honestly the lazer focus on capturing notes as efficiently as pen and paper. I wanted something that could *actually* replace my pile of notebooks and post-its and haven't looked back.

It is really cool to see a new secret store built on top of SPIFFE in a native way. This is a great way to show how a common production identity framework can make other things much simpler and automated.

There is a lot of block and tackle here but he core flow is surprisingly simple.
