You can literally tell any story in pro-wrestling, which is why people get frustrated when they’re given recycled versions of the same handful of them; and why something new and different might be overblown in terms of excellence 🤼

And that’s before even getting into the performance aspect of it; people put their lives in each other’s hands in service of these stories. That requires a kind of trust and mutual consent that completely separates it from other (“real”) combat sports.

Characters weave in and out of stories. They either hold grudges or let shit go in service of something bigger than themselves. If contexts change, characters might change as a result. When it’s a well told story, you can’t help but identify with it at some level.

My real answer is similar, which I think is best summed up by what my cousin told me after I took him to an early Dynamite show in 2019: “it’s like watching a really violent play.”
