i think amazon is fundamentally evil, but I don't see much point in acting like the very rare event of downtime means cloud services are less reliable than self hosting. self hosting is more error prone and less secure and the cost of maintenance is much higher than a subscription fee

if it's an anti-trust argument, sure, i agree. but you're never gonna win an argument against monopolistic practices on the basis of claiming economies of scale don't exist simply because they're not flawless.
it's like saying cloudflare is less secure when a single security vulnerability is found.

i dont rly see how you're gonna end up with less downtime or overhead by self hosting. average CTO has done the math and accounted for this. i like and prefer self hosted solutions, but it's not like downtime is assumed to never happen in either case
