It’s so hard to have a reasonable conversation about AI, because people refuse to see the massive upsides of job elimination, higher electrical bills, hard drive shortages, poisoning black people in Memphis, and an economy where a handful of pedos with bad hair control your life

Silicon Valley is a cult.

Not something that looks like a cult, but an actual, literal, non-figurative, end-times death cult with direct historical ties to the maniac fringe of 20th century charismatic religious movements.

This is a ludicrous hypothetical. I mean, what if I could fly to the Jupiter, or become invisible? Why do you think AI will just make everything magically wonderful?

A major issue with β€œthe left refuses to engage with AI” is that, at heart, the industry wants complete deregulation and zero safeguards, and there’s no meaningful way for the left to engage with that. Engaging with the technology itself is a secondary or maybe even tertiary issue.

People talk about this stuff in terms of how much it'll suck for gaming and I hate to inform you how many MRI machines, X-Rays, all sorts of other vital machinery are just a Windows IoT Edition PC in a beige plastic box with a big magnet/accelerator/whatever attached.

Love that AI, a thing we hate and don’t want, steals everything, ruins everything, shittifies everything. Drinks our water, plagiarizes our art, pisses all over our information fidelity, drives kids to suicide, serves the right-wing, and fucks up our devices and services. Good job, techbros!

Heard an interview today where a guy said (and I'm paraphrasing) "LLMs have had years to train on every aspect of chess, read every book and article about it, review every match, but when they play, they STILL makes illegal moves. That tells you everything."

And.

Yup.

But the idea these techbros have that they'll be able to input a book, comic, script, or even a string of prompts, and AI will pump out something remotely watchable (turning them into a FILMMAKER!) is a fever dream had by absolute bucketheads who have zero idea how movies are actually made.

I understand framing the AI bubble RAM supply crisis in terms of stuff like video game consoles because nerds can conceptualize that but the framing does really undersell the sheer magnitude of how it's going to fuck up everything that even touches a computer.

LLMs do not understand, will not understand, and cannot ever understand information. It's a glorified search engine combined with auto-compete, and you should treat it as such. No matter how much LLM companies try to tell you their machines can think or reason, they cannot and will not.

Many people in South Africa, where Elon is from, died to create a genuinely multiracial polity. They were killed by people who thought like Elon.

The people who thought like Elon also lost. Seems their β€œcommon culture” of white supremacy wasn’t enough.

American culture of the 1840’s would have been *very fucking surprised* to see the Irish considered as co-founders.

Elon’s an ahistorical dipshit, but its always worth saying some stuff out loud: if youβ€˜re a fellow Irish-American and you aren’t 100% pro-immigrant, you’re a fucking embarassment.

"I say! Are you Georgina?"
The child in the opposite bed sat up and looked across at Anne. She had very short
curly hair, almost as short as a boy's. Her face was burnt a dark-brown with the sun, and

her very blue eyes looked as bright as forget-me-nots in her face. But her mouth was
rather sulky, and she had a frown like her father's.
"No," she said. "I'm not Georgina."
"Oh!" said Anne, in surprise. "Then who are you?"
"I'm George," said the girl. "I shall only answer if you call me George. I hate being a girl.
I won't be. I don't like doing the things that girls do. I like doing the things that boys do. I
can climb better than any boy, and swim faster too. I can sail a boat as well as any
fisher-boy on this coast. You're to call me George. Then I'll speak to you. But I shan't if
you don't."
"Oh!" said Anne, thinking that her new cousin was most extraordinary. "All right! I don't
care what I call you. George is a nice name, I think. I don't much like Georgina. Anyway,
you look like a boy."

To give you an idea of how deranged the UK has become about gender stuff, here's Enid Blyton - the absolute avatar of classic English conservatism and a huge fan of racist "gollywogs" - casually describing a gender non-conforming kid in the 1940s and having their friends be totally cool with it.

Russians paid crypto to restore Starlink. Ukrainian hackers took the money – and the data Fake registration channels collected data on Russian units, contacts, and terminal locations.

Ukrainian hackers say they set up fake Starlink activation channels - and Russians fell for it.

They collected 2,400 data packages on Russian terminals, pocketed $6,000 in crypto, and passed it all to Ukrainian authorities. Every identified terminal was permanently disabled.
