You’re a better person than I… when the toddler is deliberately being obstructive and whiny I can totally understand how someone would do it out of sheer frustration, if it were socially acceptable. I’m glad it’s not.

To all of the creators out there, you don't need to make some "best of" list to make a lot of people happy through your work.

I’m harboring a dangerous secret: sometimes my wife asks me to do a “quick vacuum.” Sometimes she asks me to do a “good vacuum.” I do them both the same way. I don’t know any other way to vacuum

Mrs Twice: Oh, poor Ralph! Do you know what it's like to be married to a wonderful man for fourteen years?

Det. Frank Drebin:
No, I can't say that I do. I did live with a guy once, though, but that was just for a couple of years. [Mrs. Twice makes sounds of trying not to cry] Usual slurs, rumours, innuendos - people didn't understand.

[Ed gives Mrs. Twice a handkerchief and she starts crying into it]

Det. Frank Drebin:
[to camera]

Det. Frank Drebin:
Ran him outta town like a common pygmy. [Mrs. Twice starts crying a little harder]

Capt. Ed Hocken:
Did he have any enemies?

Mrs. Twice:
Well the Democrats didn't like him.

Det. Frank Drebin:
[continues, to camera, with Mrs. Twice continuing to sob softly] Sure, he was a physical education major but he had a mind! He could think, he wasn't all muscle, all body, all sinewy limbs. He got married, you know, later - had three kids. Never cared for her. Sent a nice gift, never got a note.

Capt. Ed Hocken:
Now, I know this is a long shot, but did he ever eat chop suey?

Mrs. Twice:
[crying] No, no he never did.

Capt. Ed Hocken:
It was just a hunch.

Det. Frank Drebin:
[continues, to camera, with Mrs. Twice still going back into her softly sobbing mode] I told him she was wrong. And that youngest boy, just like his father. Football hero. Lived with him for a year. It wasn't the same.

[wistfully]

Det. Frank Drebin:
You can't go back.

This scene ran on network television in 1982.

There was nothing remotely like it on there.

Age verification? My mom, a nurse, had a fellow-nurse coworker who deliberately smoked through pregnancy in order to have a smaller baby and hence easier birth

Great swathes of HHG I found implausible to the point of clownish when I read it in 1990, now it reads like sickeningly-accurate satire

I already thought this pencil portrait Jack Kirby did of his wife Roz was great but then I read the caption: "A drawing of Mrs. Kirby done, from memory, on the back of a piece of German stationery picked up off a dead enemy soldier." DAAAAMMMMNNN!

A nation so terrified of its own shadow, the police are arresting gardeners carrying sheathed tools

A garden fork is a much more capable weapon. Take your eye out from 6’ away. Would the Great British Public freak out over that? How about a lawn mower? Terrifying things! 😱

Polestar seems to speak to the same 16yos-at-heart who buy BMWs and Model Ss (and who would buy Roadsters if they were a real car)

26.07.2025 18:47 — 👍 3    🔁 0    💬 3    📌 0

Which is awesome, because everyone who likes EVs and hates Elon really needs Polestar to be a success

I’d be interested in seeing the i4 comparison. I saw a Polestar 3 on the road yesterday and it looks very tasty indeed. Maybe when the EV6 lease is up…

So that’s a “no, I haven’t”, then

This article is highly selective, those are just the losers! Hyundai/Kia (same parent company) are absolutely killing it with their EVs. The loniq 5 or EV6 are about the same price as the Chevy Equinox, and there’s no comparison, it’s like a different class of car

Marshall McLuhan explained it very well 60ish years ago. In a nutshell: because your brain now relies on an external solution for this problem and hence loses some aspect of its capability

1000%, and not just London. Thirty years ago, come Friday 11.15pm, the main street of every English town was an alcohol-fuelled low intensity war zone. Now the teens are mostly sipping boba and are in bed by ten

Centrist/Moderate is great branding because it implies reasonableness but there's nothing reasonable about stubbornly clinging to pro-business and pro-upper class politics when the country is falling apart. This is an ideology like any other, and it's a bad one
