Letter: Guelph Has Legal Duty to Clear Snowy Bike Lanes The City of Guelph has voted to cancel winter maintenance of bike lanes despite their Municipal Act obligations to keep roadways safe.

Check out our letter to Mayor Guthrie and the City of Guelph about how their decision to not clear bike lanes may run contrary to their Municipal Act obligations and jurisprudence:

This applies across Ontario FYI.

Yikes, stay safe out there. This seems like it will end up costing the city more when someone does inevitably gets hurt, but hoping that’s not the case for the safety of cyclists. Drivers will just have to adapt to people on bikes being more in their way now, and not by choice.

You’d think so! I certainly did. An inevitable law suit will probably end up costing the city more than just doing the right thing in the first place.

Cycling advocates warn there will be more angry drivers this winter After council voted to leave out snow removal for on-street bike lanes from the 2026 budget

New @taypace.bsky.social article outlining the many concerns around council’s decision to not plow bike lanes this winter, with some insightful feedback from @activeguelph.bsky.social & @bicyclemayorguelph.bsky.social. This is a mistake and a liability. #Guelph #cycling @thebikinglawyer.bsky.social

Perhaps uninterested but also seemingly priced out of the profession. It’s more feasible for people who have already earned their wealth and have a safety net in place. As someone who used to do sessional teaching, it didn’t pay the bills & the scheduling also didn’t allow me to have a regular 9-5.

Agreed, for a city that loves to call itself progressive, there’s so much contradiction through mayor & council’s decision making. We appreciate your work and advocacy, someone has to do it and it sure isn’t our elected officials in #guelph. @bicyclemayorguelph.bsky.social also does great work here.

Yup, heard about this from friends in Guelph. Very upsetting. You spend money on infra and encourage people to use it, but then cut funding to keep it safe an useable all year? What a waste or resources and potential hazard. If anyone is injured as a result, they should call us.

Thank you! I appreciate that (and your advocacy) very much. Hope to brunch again soon 😎

FUND OUR SCHOOLS
Your government keeps saying you want to give parents a voice.
We are demanding to be heard.
We need a fully funded education system with transparency and accountability. In Toronto there are 22 democratically elected trustees that have knowledge of their communities and community needs. It is an invaluable resource for parents and students. We don't need a call centre. Listen to parents. Maintain our trustees who are elected by us to support us and our children. FUND OUR SCHOOLS.

WHAT IS BILL 33?
Removes Local Control from Local School Boards
The Ministry of Education now has the power to remove local control & public voice from school boards and their elected trustees without a non-partisan, third-party investigation, based only on their opinion of what "the public good" is. This means they could remove all local control and transparency from policy, program, and budget decision-making.

WHAT IS BILL 33?
Policing in Schools instead of investing
in Real Student Supports.
Province-wide, Special Education is underfunded by more than $850 million. Data from across
North America shows that
students with disabilities have significant negative impacts from school officer programs, and the
'safety' supports that are needed are social workers, child & youth workers, education support workers, and other professionals.

@bicyclemayorguelph.bsky.social at least the route 98 expansion just passed, but BARELY (and certainly not supported by the mayor)

Probably not, but the unfortunate reality is that public transportation also does not seem like a priority for the city. The decision felt feelings-based rather than on facts, which is not ideal when poor bike infrastructure is a safety concern which often leads to severe injury and sometimes death.

This daytime shelter is a necessary resource for unhoused or precariously housed people of #Guelph. The city received a fantastic application from RCM and Stepping Stone, and to deny this opportunity would be a reckless and costly mistake.

Below that, the phrase "ON BILL 60" is written in white capital letters. The main body of the text is in white quoting the second letter: This anti-democratic bill biases the process of landlord and tenant relations in one direction: towards landlords with the money, legal representation, and time to maximize their profits and usage of the Landlord and Tenant Board. In the meantime, members of the community will continue to face ever-increasing access to justice barriers. Even under the current LTB regime, Disabled tenants can barely get the representation and support they need to bring forward applications to uphold their rights to accommodation in housing protected under the Human Rights Code. And in yellow: How much worse will things be when landlords are further advantaged with faster eviction mechanisms and retaliations?
