It's mostly that wolves don't exhibit sexual dimorphism and I want my werewolves to be bestial and scary, not like, obviously lewd. They can be sexy but in more of an animalistic way.

It may truly be that the reason we have so many different languages is that people like to slightly change words to be cute, funny, or different, and then those changes get picked up and repeated and eventually that's just how everyone says it now. And we have examples of this from within our lives.

It's just like one day someone starts saying "skeets" instead of "tweets" and everyone copies him and you do that for hundreds of years and now no one can understand each other.

The completely maddening footnote to this is that we've tried for ages to figure out why people just start speaking differently when they move far apart from each other and the legitimate answer seems to be, I wish I was kidding: We don't know and it seems to be largely arbitrary.

This happens all the time where our languages diverged so long ago that we encounter a word in a different Indo-European language that *we have forgotten used to be the same word* and re-borrow it back in to mean something else. This is so freaking interesting to me.

You might ask, does the Germanic "water" word go the other way? Does it have a direct descendant with no borrowing in Romance? Well, it does. Latin "unda", Spanish "onda", French "onde", meaning wave, which we later *Re-Borrowed!* to get the word "undulation"

And it's not because the Romans called it "Scandian Aqua Land" or anything. It doesn't come from the Latin. It shares a common ancestor with the Latin. It's the surviving direct descendant in Germanic of the word that just means "water" generally in the Romance languages.

There are some wild cognates with these words for very basic concepts that were very important in the lives of ancient people. Like "Aqua" in Latin came from a different proto-word that meant "flowing water" originally. Know where else that ended up?

That "tter" in otter is the same "ter" in water and also the "dr" in hydro- and hydra. Those sounds all came from what was at one point a single word. This makes my brain light up like a Christmas tree, for some reason.

Stuff like this completely blows my mind. The word "hydra" is cognate with (shares a common ancestor word in the ancient language whose descendants would include both Greek and English) the word "otter" because they're both a thing that lives in w-"otter" (or "hydro").
