No way that the average MP could tell you that 70% of the country has less income than this threshold. Or probably in most cases that they themsleves are in the top 4% of earners without accounting for expenses or other income.

I just think people who get paid £100k a year just have basically no conception of how many skilled workers earn less than £35k, they work backwards from their own world. People not trained to think about it constantly are so bad at instinctual maths they don't realise income dist/n is exponential.

I actually think that's a large part of what people disliked about Picard, was that it was significantly removed from the staged play style of Golden era trek.

I think TNG is at that golden point in history where TV wasn't just a play that got filmed but where it also still has a heavy influence of stage writing.

The point of the Drake equation is to quantify the component parts of that qualitative question of are we alone in the universe.

We've placed increasingly precise constraints on many of the terms of the drake equation. Development rate and lifetime of socially complex life are the uncertain terms.
