That time someone said, "Oh you're one of those science is right idiots" to me and I just knew in their head they were actually using "your" and not "you're".

You as well - your list is great, and I didn't want anyone to miss that story. Thank you for doing this.

Even though New York, Washington, Colorado, and Maryland can’t redistrict in time for 2026 β€” they need to be laying the groundwork to draw new maps for β€˜28.

SCOTUS could give the GOP up to 19 new seats by striking down the VRA. We can’t be caught off guard. We need to be ready to cancel them out.

Of course, I was in a hyper-literate space and people there still read the news, so take from this story what you will.

Of all the things happening in our country right now, I think the falling literacy rate is one of the most disconcerting and harmful.

I was a skeptic about the import of the Epstein files.

But 3 invasions of cities, one military buildup outside Venezuela, a government shutdown, and so many other things meant to distract have me convinced whatever’s in there is the biggest presidential scandal in U.S. history.

In the short time since Kavanaugh wrote that opinion, his assertions have been proved demonstrably, almost laughably false too many times to count. As Sherrilyn Ifill notes, the justice’s claims were already belied by the factual record in that case, which showed ICE agents violently harassing and detaining American citizens for extended periods simply because they are Latino. Now the agency, freed from constitutional restraints by SCOTUS, has stopped pretending to be engaged in anything other than racial profiling. Bovino’s admission only confirms what we already knew: These detentions, far from the β€œbrief” inconvenience Kavanaugh described, are often lengthy, violent, and dangerous. Ifill and Anil Kalhan, a professor of law at Drexel University, have proposed calling these detainments β€œKavanaugh stops,” a label that’s quickly catching on.

Just to note. January 23, 2019 there was a vote to reopen government (HJ RES 28, roll call vote 46) when the govt had been shut down for 30 days.

Mike Johnson voted β€œno” on that.

They didn’t seem to mind shutdowns then

An educational system that does not sufficiently teach history will create students who do not sufficiently know how to recognize tyranny as it arrives.

Any solution now is going to be long & difficult. There was a super-easy solution -- just don't let the guy win the election -- but everybody had other priorities, I guess, so here we are.

Opinion | Civility Is a Fantasy

Always read Roxane Gay:

"We are at such a dangerous and delicate moment in American history. The onus is on all of us to reject the fantasy of civility in favor of repair. This country is broken, but that need not be permanent."

I cannot tell you how grim the AI in higher ed situation is. Many of the students have completely surrendered to letting AI do their homework, badly, I might add. How do you fix this? Truly, what the hell do we do, beyond what grading can address, which isn't a solution?

Tweet From Obama mentioning my firing from the Washington post. Wirh a photo of me

The last political column I was allowed to write in the @washingtonpost.com was a criticism of Obama.

His people took issue with my piece, but we were respectful.

Now he is tweeting in support of me.

This is how free political speech and respect for debate *actually works*.

Or used to work.

Posted this with commentary. Deleted. It needs no commentary but this: I believe it to be the truth not just about poetry but about everything.

I don’t care what you pretended you were so concerned about. I’m not gone play this game with y’all.

Just admit you were HORRIBLY WRONG.

We’ve all had to admit we were wrong: That’s adulthood.

I added ALT TEXT to the post of @lippoenen.bsky.social.

As a retired teacher who also has grandchildren, the irony resonates with me.

Why doesn't this happen in other countries? (a rhetorical question, of course)
