"NZ's recession has so far claimed 27,000 jobs over the past 12 months. Although this doesn't tell the full story; total job hours have actually shrunk further. If you factor in how many part-time jobs have replaces full-time equivalents (FTE), it actually equates to a total FTE work reduction of 74,000 jobs. And that starts to sound more grim"

A graph is included showing this.

'Act of racism': Education Ministry cans children's school book for too many Māori words "Our members see this move as an act of white supremacy. It's an act of racism," says Te Akatea, the Māori Principals' Association.

It uses too much of an official language, is a weird thing for the government to say, to put it mildly

Thanks, Tabetha. Crazy we're paying the same price, despite the fact that the butter has travelled halfway across the world to get to you!

Curious what that cost you, Donna. We're paying about US$6 per pound of butter here in NZ, where we produce vast quantities of the stuff (but export 95% of it).

Local elections in NZ are a democratic mess. 78 councils, no central info, run by private companies.

Stunning breakthrough: the platypus and echidnas came from the South Pole Just when you thought Australia’s animals couldn’t get any weirder comes the astounding revelation that the ancestors of the platypus and echidnas evolved in Antarctica.

Do you ever stop and think to yourself 'wow, the antarctic forests of the cretaceous and eocene were probably *really weird*'

Well this is bad. Google is indexing ChatGPT conversations exposing sensitive user data

I tried a few quick searches. I found someone's chat where I can see their api key

I found some building their resume. Their name, email and phone numbers are exposed.

Whether removing people from the Māori roll is intentional or part of some 'administrative error', it provides a really solid example of why people need to be able to update their enrolment details right up to the final day of an election.

Mediocrity, Accountability, and Artificial Intelligence The managerial class loves AI because it allows them to avoid responsibility for their failures. That should terrify us all.

My latest newsletter asks whether tech's managerial class is excited about generative AI because it distances them from any responsibility for their failures -- and thus, any accountability.

Second frame, closer up, “I’m the real victim here. ME! They’re deranging me” tap tap.
Third frame, closer still, with hands to face, “OMG! They’ve given me DERANGEMENT SYNDROME!”

Not Japan-related, but since we all need a distraction from The Horrors, Takaya Suzuki points out a study that examined 408 sleeping cats and found the majority (65%) curl leftwards.

I'm not sure how useful this information is, but...it's yours now.
