Cops Used Flock to Monitor No Kings Protests Around the Country A massive cache of Flock lookups collated by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) shows as many as 50 federal, state, and local agencies used Flock during protests over the last year.

New: cops used Flock AI-enabled cameras to monitor No Kings protests around the country. Also monitored No Hands protests and protests against DOGE.

Trump's line about the murdered Jamal Khashoggiβ€”"A lot of people didn't like that gentleman that you're talking about....Things happen."β€”is truly heinous. It's evil.

The president of the United States said that. In the nauseatingly gilded Oval Office. Next to the dictator who ordered the killing.

CIA concludes Saudi crown prince ordered Jamal Khashoggi’s assassination Audio recordings, intercepted phone calls and other intelligence link Mohammed bin Salman to killing that Saudis say was conducted by rogue elements.

A reminder that seven years ago almost to the day, the CIA determined that Mohammed Bin Salman ordered the killing of @washingtonpost.com journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

I hired and worked with Jamal for a year.

The AWS Outage Was a Nightmare for College Students The outage impacted online learning platform Canvas, which is used by half of college students across the US, leaving many unable to access course materials or contact professors.

According to more than a dozen college and uni students, β€œthe Canvas outage threw off their schedules, preventing them from not just submitting and viewing assignments but also from participating in-class activities, contacting professors, and accessing the textbooks and other materials…”

Teens calling Idaho's suicide hotline are being told they can't proceed with the conversation without parental consent. Many of the callers are then hanging up.

Idaho approved a strict parental consent law last year.

Two people fighting the Bear Gulch fire on the Olympic Peninsula were arrested by federal law enforcement Wednesday, in a confrontation described by firefighters and depicted in photos and video.

Why the two firefighters were arrested is unclear. But a spokesperson for the Incident Management Team leading the firefighting response said the team was β€œaware of a Border Patrol operation on the fire,” that it was not interfering with the firefighting response and referred reporters to the Border Patrol station in Port Angeles.

Over three hours, federal agents demanded identification from the members of two private contractor crews. The crews were among the 400 people including firefighters deployed to fight the wildfire, the largest active blaze in Washington state.

Border Patrol, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security did not respond to requests for comment Wednesday about the confrontation.

It is unusual for federal border agents to make arrests during the fighting of an active fire, especially in a remote area.

This is so important. We can't just allow frankly evil technologies to dominate us unchecked. The party should be over for Silicon Valley but which countries have the guts to actually pull the plug or regulate them into the insignificance they should be?

Look, there's no one solution we can impose to most of this. Students who think the work doesn't matter will find ways around it. Students who are busy and overwhelmed will seek solutions. As with everything else we don't solve, we need to think about what drives it.

It really feels to me that a strong approach to the AI panic in education really is just... smaller classes, not treating education like an assembly line, and making lessons matter.

I'm not reflexively anti-technology. I was always that guy at my uni who was eager to try out some new thing that might be a cool new way for students to learn. But those new things were just tools we could choose to use, they weren't the entire ocean in which we had no choice but to swim.

It's my experience (from 25 yrs of teaching) that "learning management" tools like Canvas do nothing to facilitate student learning & make my job MORE, not less, time consuming. That additional time I put in contributes zero to improving the student experience. But Canvas gets our money regardless.

La. regulators approve Entergy power plants for Meta’s AI data center Louisiana Public Service Commissioners voted four to one to approve Entergy’s three new gas plants to power Meta’s largest-ever data center.

Louisiana has to build three new natural gas power plants to accommodate the "AI" data center that Meta just crammed through because said center will use *Three Times* as much electricity (and, thus, attendant resources) as the *Entire City Of New Orleans*, every year.

Y'all this isn't sustainable.
