"new tone" was a totally imaginary story that the media invented to try to staunch the bleeding Trump was suffering this weekend and help move past what turned out to be a completely disastrous story for the administration

The most obvious thing here is fetishistic disavowal like everyone is saying, but even a good faith interpretation would raise the question of what they could possibly hope to learn amidst what they should already know about those people

this is a fake problem. no one is saying this to regular, offline people who are coming around. they’re saying it to people who are engaged in professional political analysis who committed professional malpractice by scolding people who saw what was coming.

no, those people shouldn’t get a break.

Snow fundamentally changes the visible landscape, and the most likely outcome of something like this would be either snowplows repeatedly totaling every street parked car on the block, or learning months later that they were secretly remotely operated from the Philippines

Belief

17.01.2026 12:50 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

That many of them believe it is immaterial. When Kyle Kirchner revealed to our class as first-graders that he had found presents in the closet labeled "from Santa," I'm sure there were skeptics, but their believe did not make Santa real.

17.01.2026 12:50 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

In fact, if you want the article to be organized around a revelation, the easiest one is right there: it's not even that Santa isn't real, it's that he was your parents the whole time. If you wanted to treat them with credulity at first, now is clearly the time to point out the fiction.

Santa is not real and you shouldn't write in the paper that Santa is real.

The list leaned right, to be sure. Loury, who is Black, zealously opposes affirmative action. Mamet had called Trump "the best president since Abraham Lincoln." Hock served as chairwoman of an organization called Texas GOP 2020 Victory. Several of the academics had experienced backlash for taking conservative positions. These included Dorian Abbot, a geophysicist who'd had a planned lecture at MIT on extraterrestrial life canceled over his views on DEI; Peter Boghossian, who'd resigned from Portland State University in part because of the institution's response to his sending hoax articles to academic journals; and University of Sussex professor Kathleen Stock, who'd faced protests over her allegedly transphobic views, which she disputed.

And

2. If you have to to soften the lede, which is that this is a bunch of right wingers, which "many" have known since day 1, then the whole premise is doodoo.

Text: The harshness of Lonsdale's diatribe would have been out of place on any college campus, but was particularly so at UATX, which had framed itself as a bulwark against the cancel culture that many contend has become common in the American academy. UATX's image had never been entirely nonpartisan, but Lonsdale's message signaled a decisive, rightward turn.

I'm not going to do a whole critique of the article but I will say that:

1. It changes the whole sympathy structure of the story to say "many contend" instead of "UATX people contend"

17.01.2026 12:28 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

This article is incredibly funny to basically everyone who clocked UATX at the time for what it was. At the same time, it's written with the kind of premise that would structure an interaction with a child: Santa is real, but sometimes he's too busy to write back.

That's why they hate them (I know Martin knows this). The amount of moaning about these cameras in the average social media comment section gives the game away: a lot of people just want to drive dangerously without consequence.
