In general, selective schools don't want their classes too tilted towards any one demographic. So there is also bias against women and towards men given the applicant pool.

And, at selective schools, the overall bias is TOWARDS rich white legacies (primarily white), non-asian minorities, and poor white ppl. The overall bias is against asians of all types, and middle class white ppl.

Let's be clear. They are opting for less selective colleges. That's it. The Asian community has done a better job prioritizing what the most selective colleges look for -- to the point that Harvard was actively selecting against being Asian to the extent they could.

This is exactly what I hated about a lot of the Post-Floyd protests. Not about effectuating change. About a small cadre of angry ppl venting spleen, and the knee jerk need to defend their horseshit bc they were "on our side."

Compare this kind of hot-headed idiocy with the incredible heroism of random (unarmed) older women who observe ICE and keep their calm and their wits about them while being dragged out of their at gunpoint. Ask yourself who has done more to stop the feds.

Yeah this is why they’ll debate whether it’s too dangerous to go to a protest without a mask but then passionately advocate t0 all be carrying guns when monitoring ICE. (Really: it’s often the same people.) The heuristic isn’t β€œwhat will keep us safe” but β€œdoes it make me feel like a revolutionary.”

Some of his commments, like the Polanski one, feel like they were worked out beforehand. Just a question of getting the guy to say the right stupid things.

So the rules are you can’t take down a statue of Robert E Lee but you can tear down the Kennedy center if Philip glass makes your dick feel small

Why does the intersection of viciousness and stupidity have to fall on so many ppl just trying to live their lives without harming anyone else.

If I am following the immigrant deportation logic correctly, to be safe we should deport all CBP agents.

It feels like Bill Gates could do more good for the world honestly talking about Epstein than he is doing with his philanthropy.

the civil rights movement did not win by awakening the secret virtue of Southern whites by appealing to their better nature. it won by producing a demonstration of their brutality Northerners could not ignore

I hated the episode. It treats the Klingons as children who need to be fooled Santa Claus style. I prefer the Shakespearean infighting and rivalries of TNG.

Musk wants to merge xAI and SpaceX. Really denigrating the SpaceX brand -- which has actually accomplished some impressive feats of engineering whatever Bsky ppl may say.

I’m old and have a lot less at stake than many people. If I get arrested, I won’t lose my pension. If I get shot, I’ll lose 10-20 years of arthritis getting worse and worse. I have no reason not to rouse a little rabble.

Trump looks at the monuments of empires who have died out or are in decline and wants to build our own. Seems he understands his Nero'esque role in the country.

The state militias/police forces cannot stand against the military -- not even when the military ships all its excess munitions and vehicles to the state militias/police.

When ppl like @radiofreetom.bsky.social talk about federalism -- which I'm slightly net against -- the military is still under federal control. Under an out of control fed gov't, the only real pushback is civil protest. You have to hope the military prefers the ppl regardless of design.

His legacy of taking a company aggressively focused on product design and made it .. a boring place mostly making slight refinements/degradations of pre-Cook products?

We know they are actively trying to redact the Epstein files to protect certain ppl, and yet their names constantly show up when there is any file dump. Makes you wonder (no it doesn't we all sort of know, even those in active denial).

A new study from Anthropic finds that gains in coding efficiency when relying on AI assistance did did not meet statistical significance; AI use noticeably degraded programmers’ understanding of what they were doing. Incredible.

I tend to view the current moment as points for citizen civil action over depending on gov't officials to do the right thing. Not a federalism v centralized power thing. See also S. Korea where it was citizen action that won the moment in the face of a more centralized gov't.

I'm really in favor of non-Euclidean zoning. A hyperbolic geometry based zoning space could fit an infinite amount of housing between the zeroth and first unit of space!

My assumption is that this sort of position goes to someone who is great at networking, glad handing. It can't be based on Brooks' actual accomplishments as a public intellectual. Nothing personal to any Op-Ed columnist, but most of them should be sentenced to anonymity.
