I'm officially a Resident Evil convert now folks. What an amazing series, always willing to experiment and surprise while still being true to its roots. Got through all these in the last 2 months.

As I said, it's really not performant and very hacky, but it enabled me to use existing logic for autotiling pretty fast.
I'd say the key for me is the property painter inside the TileSet. That's where you can make a certain tile correspond to something else, in my case, a unique ID
So what I do is:
1. Take the mouse input to a certain cell
2. Pass it on to the 2D tilemap
3. After it updates, I check if it changed, and, if a change is detected, I instantiate a 3D scene that corresponds to one the ids set up the in TileSet (or clear set to none)

That was my first approach too and it works great! Unfortunately I really need colliders in the tiles, so I had to move to a scene based approach
Subviewports are so useful
The implementation is very very hacky, but I'm going to look for ways to make it more universal. Could make a good plugin!

Saw how the backend worked in C++ (bless access to source code) and was like yeah I'm not redoing that
So I created a hidden 2D tileset and propagated its changes to a tool that places 3d tiles accordingly.
It worked!
