Yeah after chilling for a sec I kinda got dragged into internet fight mode, way over my original assertion. I guess me growing up with a trans friend who was afraid to come out for years, and suffered unnecessarily as a result. Yeah it's a meme, but that doesn't mean it's benign

Admittedly I'm not. I just saw this meme and wanted to push back on the idea that trans people will universally be rejected by their families, as posited by the original post. In truth my objection came from personal experience seeing another's fear and the same rhetoric from our side gave me pause

I know it may. But there's a difference between "May" and "Will". In the original post, read what it says. It says you will never have to meet her parents. I think that implies "will" more than "may"

I am not pushing trans people who genuinely feel unsafe to come out. I'm mostly pushing against a narrative I see in this meme that coming out is, by its very nature, destructive to your relationship with your family. It isn't. I can't speak to personal experience, but I have seen its harm

I think I may have gotten a little lost in the argument weeds so I think I need to articulate my actual point: The meme posted assumes trans people have bad relationships with their family. I don't like the idea of this being an assumption among trans circles as it can chill trans people coming out

Yes I'm not saying "oh always give your parents the benefit of the doubt." I'm saying "trans circles messaging about how coming out will inevitably damage your relationship with your family" chills people who would otherwise feel safe from coming out

Oh I am not denying that what you describe is the reality for a tragic number of trans people. It absolutely is. I'm pushing back on the implicit assumption that a trans woman will never have a relationship she wants to share with her parents made by the tweet in the screenshot

The way the tweet in the screenshot talks about coming out reinforces the idea that EVERY trans person is not supported by their parents, which simply is not true. And I think messaging with that subtext is not good

Yeah I know that coming out can be a dangerous prospect for many trans people. I don't deny that. I am addressing messaging I see where the idea of coming out is assumed to be - in all cases - damaging to relationships with family members. Especially when it comes from nominally pro-trans sources
