I don't think it's impossible. I think the timescales to achieve it are probably on the order of the time it took the human brain to evolve.

There was maybe some reason to think it might when putting a lot more data in the model made the outputs lot more impressive than anyone expected. There was clearly a threshold of emergent complexity that was crossed. Then they put the entire Internet in the thing and it didn't change much at all.

Not my observation, but the fact that these people started this whole endeavor by stealing everything they could proves that they never had any ethics and were never going to develop any when their creation came out evil.
