250 miles is between 3-4 hours of driving. I will stop and refuel and take a break at that distance because I have driven 3-4 hours and I want to not be driving for a bit. Refueling at that time is practical, because gas staions are built as being rest stops.

If my tank holds 300 to 350 miles of fuel depending on speed, and I refuel after 250 to 275 miles every time, I do not refuel more often with increased consumption. I put more in the tank, yes, but *not more often*.

This is the real world, not spherical chickens in a vacuum.

The difference in fuel consumption is not sufficient to result in more stops during trips in my experience. And, yes, I was keeping strict track of consumption. Fuel stops for me have been very consistently at specific locations along a route, regardless of remaining fuel.

Also, the canal being built is why Chicago exists in the first place, without it, there's no water route to the ports.
