Things I have learned since starting to unmask my autism so much that autism is now the default setting.
1. I really need to know why for everything. Everything.
2. Neurodivergent kids flock to me wherever I go.
3. 9/10 people shrug it off when I let them know. 1/10 tell me I'm brave...

So exciting to find a #podcast on #autism and #ageing which is such a neglected topic.
Lots of good insights and suggestions here, and there’s a written summary if you prefer to get information that way. Thanks so much for posting this @nickihastie.bsky.social

Autistic Burnout vs Depression Autistic burnout vs depression, what are the differences? In this article, you'll learn about the overlap and how psychologists tell them apart.

For me, burnout leads to scary loss of function, while depression feels more like lack of motivation/enjoyment. This infographic created by an AuDHD psychologist might help. β€œNon-existence ideation” also hits me hard in burnout. neurodivergentinsights.com/misdiagnosis...

Getting standardization right The rise of evidence-based medicine (EBM)[1][1] during the past few decades has inspired primary care clinicians to consider the role of standardization in their practices. We have seen the proliferation of protocols and guidelines to manage an increasing variety of conditions and illnesses. While

Being a ND cancer patient is so horribly, painfully hard.
Specific support for patients like us is rare. It’s insane!
Pls help me raise awareness of this acc & the need behind it.

"Letting customers know that you are autistic is unprofessional".
Not the first time I've heard that (paraphrased and bizarre) attitude.
What's 'unprofessional' is prejudice against marginalised groups, minorities, disabled and neurodivergent people.

I hope @teamlabouruk.bsky.social takes a leftward turn and clearly, unequivocally state that we all contribute to society through our humanity and in countless ways-from caring to creativity. Fetishising #work as a cure is dangerous on so many levels, not least to individual souls.

It’s said that many #autistic people have excellent pattern recognition. For me it’s also pattern *seeking*. I hate when something seems like it should fit a pattern but doesn’t. Makes my brain itch. Can’t stop trying to make it fit (tho impossible). Any autistic folks know what I’m talking about?

There’s no such thing as an autistic mouse Animal models of autism haven’t helped autistic people enough. So why do scientists still use them?

Vox actually last month did this great piece on this specific thing and other issues in Autism research...

Growing old with autism For many autistic adults, the golden years are tarnished by poor health, poverty and, in some cases, homelessness. Their plight reveals huge gaps in care.

#Ageing as an #Autistic person is challenging.
We’re more likely to have health issues but often find services inaccessible.
We value independence but aren’t supported to maintain it.
We’re as deserving as other age groups but tend to get overlooked.

The Pervasive Loneliness of Autism The pursuit of independence is deeply American. But, even if inadvertently, it’s fueling disabled people's loneliness.

Essential piece by @neuroscientist.bsky.social about autism and loneliness. By making "independence" the platonic ideal for all people, it can wind up breeding the type of loneliness that can harm #ActuallyAutistic people. time.com/6551520/lone...
