I think the transcripts for news should be made public as standard to help get some transparency and accountability on this. It would enable more people to do research. I think e.g. Cardiff uni do some good stuff but it should be possible for charities etc without having to make application.

The bbc bias in terms of migration is so systemic. I don't think I caught a single R4 presenter last week highlighting the economic difficulty posed by the massive drop in immigration, and it barely got a mentioned on the two news shows I listened to after the budget, just as new figures came out.

Yesterday King’s College London reported their student, Usama Ghanem, to the Home Office after they suspended him for protesting the genocide in Gaza.

I would guess if it was mean value, you might expect the top 1% to show higher proportion in the financial portfolio? Wonder how much data there is on the very wealthiest e.g. top 0.1%.

There's a story to tell as well around creating sovereignty for the UK which has become far too reliant on foreign lending. See BOE staff blog here. 5/5

You then get into questions around capital controls for example. I think there's work to do building an alternative economic policy here that's fully cohesive. There's a lot of economists thinking about these questions but not sure anyone's bringing it together quite into a narrative. 4/5

There would likely be implications as well for exchange rates, so consideration then needs to be given to whether you allow rates to slide and shift the economy to a structure that is closer to full employment. Doing this without causing economic shocks may need mitigation. 3/5

Partly what this highlights is that genuine economic reform cannot be piecemeal, if you want to increase spending you need to take clear qualitatively different approaches to the economy which may mean measures such as changing the mandate of institutions such as BOE/DMO. 2/5

I listened to this R4 interview and thought Zack did a great job. One challenge on questions about how the Green party would move the country to greater independence from the bond market is that this will require quite substantial reforms, the article below has some good examples. 1/5

Something I've been wondering is if Amazon's plans to integrate facial recognition into ring doorbells is being rolled out in UK and EU. People worry about digital ID (rightly) but could soon not be able to walk down their street without being ID'd.

It's interesting this sounds like it was held up in the Lords, the article I read immediately before this was about the increasing influence of unelected power in UK politics, in particular the lords. Lords needs replacing with a new second chamber, whether elected or some kind of citizens assembly.

Starmer plans on letting amateur volunteers send ppl to jail for two years without a jury, AND severely restricting the right to appeal.

This is as bad as anything Trump has attempted to do to our justice system. And it has much better odds of actually succeeding!

I think a direct line from Reform's rise and the inability of the BBC to report factually what is happening in the US, e.g. the reality of the immigration policy in the states, which UK parties are looking to mimic.
The UK public is not getting simple facts about the brutality of the US regime.

We are not an island: how have the UK’s external balance sheet risks changed over the past two decades? Colm Manning and Alice Crundwell No country is an island – in terms of economics at least, if not geography. Trade and capital link all the economies of the world. Relative to GDP, the UK has more …

Relatedly, the bank of england staff blog here shows UK is an outlier on exposure to foreign lending. Some strategy to make structural changes here seems good, though it will be challenging, but fixing things is usually.

There was some good stuff on more proactive management of the bond market in this article I thought. Good to see a politician addressing it.

I guess like you say the flipside is its not very democratic, the public can't send signals back unlike with social media. I'm still hoping we get publicly funded social media, free of surveillance and with controls on misinformation. That money and regulation coming any day now I'm sure.

I kind of like too that old pre smart tv doesn't involve data harvesting, so its increasing the information held by the public without sending information back to those with political power. It's only a symbolic thing maybe, but I feel like we need more tech that reduces information assymetry.

I kind of hope we keep linear tv for this reason, I think its good that there is somewhere everyone can see the news and know everybody else is seeing the same thing.

Today is Trans Day of Remembrance.

Today we remember and grieve all those we have lost. But we also commit – collectively – to fighting for those of us who are left. There will be hope as long as we continue to stand together.

I've wondered too if just organising normal community things like a fundraiser, or a market day can be a good way to grow networks and logistics experience to do more political stuff like finding candidates. Sounds like that mixture of activity happened here maybe. Hopefully it inspires others.

It's great to hear about someone doing this. And nice how it illustrates that community organising doesn't have to start with grand goals but can grow over time. Even if it just continued as group of friends having a space to talk about politics or their lives, that's worth a lot in this day and age

If you think anyone can with the right conditions and support make a real contribution to the country you're much more inclined to spread resources (for those who don't see the moral case). That human capital argument is undervalued in my view. 4/5
