They have a huge bookstore called Powell's City of Books. It's the largest one in the world, I think. It's amazing!

How can you end crime in DC when a criminal lives in its most famous residence?

sure, the world is going up in flames, there's unrest in the streets, and America has become a global punchline, but at least Trump voters made the handful of trans athletes in the country feel extra bad

It's because of the media no one is protesting--they're not reporting it. Or if folks are protesting that doesn't get covered either. The media is totally complicit in this sh*tshow

worth remembering that when Trump announced a travel ban in 2017, people literally went to airports to protest. Eight years later, Trump announces a new one and it's not even front page news.

We're the frogs and the water is getting awfully hot.

I’m still trying to take it all in! Β The election of Cardinal Robert Prevost as Pope Leo XIV was an extraordinary and delightful surprise. Β I was one of the many commentators who said that the choice of an American as Pope was an impossibility (or at least extreme improbability). Β I took my cue from the late Cardinal George who said that there would never be an American Pope until our country went into political decline.

But the Cardinal electors obviously felt otherwise. I am very intrigued by the new Pope’s choice of regnal name. Β Leo XIII has long been one of my papal heroes. Β He not only inaugurated the modern social teaching tradition of the Church, but he also gave rise to the revival of Thomistic thought as a means of creative engagement with the contemporary world. Β There is actually much in Leo’s teaching that would appeal to both liberals and conservatives today, and this might signal how this new Leo will function as a bridge. Β

And he’s a Chicagoan! Β Ad multos annos, Pope Leo.
