Notice the hydraulic jump area pushing eastward through the evening. Extreme fire behavior is possible on any new ignitions in the rangeland today.

28.06.2025 15:13 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0This is beside the point, but Chris Higgins is a gem. I grew up in St. Louis, and Chris has hosted a weather blog on his own dime since the early '00s. That forum was the single biggest push for me to pursue meteorology, and Chris took the time to give me career advice before heading to undergrad.

I am a bit more optimistic about the start of fire season down here, though, it just takes one decent wetting rain through early June for a soft-reset on the fuels.
My team is hiring one meteorology intern for the 2025 fire season! The position is paid + a housing stipend, and is open to all current meteorology students, both undergraduate and graduate level.

If you have a few minutes, this article by @thatsmohrlikeit.bsky.social is a great read. It gives a bit of an insight into how prescribed fire works, how my job ties into it, why it's a good thing, and why we need to pick up the pace!

GIS layers for the CDC's Social Vulnerability Index all displaying an error to load.
It's not breaking news, but I went to use the SVI tool today and it's just gone. There is no objective reason to mass-delete government datasets besides pure spite and indifference.
07.02.2025 16:47 — 👍 3 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0It can difficult to communicate drought in an area where 50-60" of rain over 12 months falls 20"+ short of normal!
