Thereβs this short story called Barbie by Gary Soto I used to read with my 5th graders. That and Mother and Daughter about a dyed dress for the dance. And we would talk about why the characters feel so much shame and anger about the bootleg Barbie/ dress. the kids had brilliant empathetic discussion

This is what bothers me. What kind of judgment could a person have without having a plan for their nazi tattoo **in advance**. donβt be a nazi but also donβt be an idiot! If I were running for municipal library board Iβd still reexamine my social media and check my tattoos

I find it really telling (disturbing) that the students think it is somehow better that their pov just happens to mimic Nazi propaganda rather than it being intentional

Also, assuming the best, that this isnβt a deliberate misunderstanding, the initial comment is about how a protest that is not met with violence isnβt seen as threatening and therefore probably isnβt really effective. Nonviolent resistance isnβt whatβs at question

This is just not an accurate representation of the Civil Rights movement. I donβt like to randomly argue online but this is just ahistorical-the Klan had infiltrated many police forces and had been terrorizing black Americans explicitly since the 30s but also before that for nearly 70years

Thereβs a fantastic Lucille Clifton quote βPeople wish to be poets more than they wish to write poetry, and that's a mistake. One should wish to celebrate more than one wishes to be celebrated.β
Anyway think youβre spot on and itβs a shame.

And more practically speaking, I teach them to take notes and self monitor. Let them know thereβs no right way, but they want to be in charge of their brains and how note taking is a great tool for that whether itβs an outline keywords, etc. itβs a muscle that can be built up

Also, I coach them in a very basic positive way. βYou can do this etcβ and I also in a crazy way like βthese companies donβt want you to think for more than 90sec because then youβd realize your addicted to their product and stop generating revenue for themβ π

I wouldnβt call myself expert, but a few things that have worked : setting a timer and requiring 10min. of quiet with nothing but the paper text and note taking tools in front of them. Then Id increase by 2 to 3 minutes every week until they can do 15/20

I read recently that a lot of the βtest industrial complexβ is promoting skimming over deep reading for K-12 students which seems related to both the lack of engagement and the attention deficit if you want to call it that
04.10.2025 17:31 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0
I canβt say that thatβs relevant to my experience. I worked hard to pick rich and engaging texts. For example, I remember teaching a great Jemison story to my New Orleans kids related to Katrina. Once I got the kids into it they were hooked, but getting them into it- excruciating.

Speaking as a K-12 teacher, post Covid what I saw was an attention gap different than vocab or safe space to do hw or early exposure to literacy- (the things tied to socioeconomics). Even kids who *could* fluently read and had advanced comprehension skills needed training in sustained focus

Meta brought AI to rural Colombia. Now students are failing exams
When Meta embedded AI bots in its apps, even students in the most remote corners of Colombia gained access. But rather than boosting learning, itβs getting in the way.
This is the giant Canary in the coal mine of what AI will do to education. Improperly adopted, it will destroy critical thinking and educational attainment.
For the oligarchs, this is a feature of AI, not a bug.

Not at all- it definitely is reportable assault and from a legal standpoint itβs absolutely assault as it involves minors. My point was that some anxiety about the bus can be founded and isnβt always just middle class panic.
