The municipality can no longer progress meaningful and impactful changes. They can try working with the Province, yet still be overridden at the final hurdle.
What's left that's safe from political interference? Collect trash, plow and maintain roads and approve the police budget without question.

Yeah completely ludicrous. How dare they plan for the province's own goal of 30% EV share by 2030. Guess that's dead too.

The province's position is that EV-friendly parking spaces means the plan is, and I quote the minister, "intentionally designed to impede housing." Pretty sure they're just fishing for excuses to dissolve city council entirely at this point.

Yeah, that β€œstrategic retreat” seems to be working well for us.

The province: We don't need the coastal protection act because cities will protect coasts.

Halifax: We're gonna protect the coast.

The province: How about go fuck yourself.

At this point... as the world burns, as temperatures rise, as the climate descends into chaos, I don't know how to understand the doubling down on fossil fuels as anything other than at best looting what's left, but that's too generous; it's simply a death cult's enthusiastic embrace of extinction.

Please remember, when I die being hit by a tractor-trailer while cycling, it was because there are no bike lanes in Halifax, and that I was doing my best to avoid being in the woods while also reducing my carbon footprint. #nspoli

The plan ignores the easiest and least expensive ways to reduce congestion:

- Allowing people to work from home
- Build bike lanes so people can bike to work

β€˜Strategic retreat’: Halifax council reverses course on Morris Street bike lane design Premier Tim Houston had threatened to override decision for a one-way street.

β€œThey’re not political talking points, they’re data-driven warnings about operational impacts and public risk” said Fillmore during the debate.

But when pressed by reporters during the break, Fillmore admitted he didn’t have that data.

Bousquet: In Ontario, Premier Doug Ford has ordered the municipality take out bike lanes. Are you preparing to do that here?

Tilley: That’s not something that we have considered at this point.

It is so fucking hard to combat misinformation when our mayor is one of the main people spreading it. I am so fucking tired of this bullshit.

Councillors really need to start bringing their own lawyers and stop trusting Traves.

Friendly reminder that 170 emails got council to vote against density around universities in the housing accelerator fund reform debates.

Cleary, Cuttell, Hinch, Kent, and White were the votes against rescission. The bravest members of council.

White is up, she's talking about the design work and the one way option is the best option based on all the trade offs she disagrees with the mayor saying "We don't have new information, we have new opposition"

Our letter to city Council: stay the course; do not obey in advance. Let Houston do his own dirty work.

We take great exception to the staff report and its recommendations.

Sucks how provincial governments in three Canadian provinces (Ontario, Alberta, and Nova Scotia) are trying to strong arm municipalities into getting rid of bike lanes.

Fully agreed, council should re-approve the project (or maybe only advance the final design work) and not cave in to the Premier's bs.

"Failure to rescind the July 8th decision would create additional financial and reputational risk for the municipality and be damaging to inter-governmental relations with the Province of Nova Scotia"
Staff want to cave. The only reputational risk is to the Province, for focusing on a non issue

"The Morris Street plan didn’t come out of thin air and yet the Province was completely silent until after the decision was made. We had zero feedback from them. I want to extend my apologies to the Premier that we were unable to read his mind."

A "common sense" decision would require politicians to follow recommendations and plans developed by transportation professionals, as was already achieved in HRM.
Province is saying those professionals are wrong, they are right.
