Just screaming into the void that a computer error caused me to spend just over 5hrs on hold to get someone to fix acct so specialty infusion med can be filled at the same pharmacy. It locked out “CVS Caremark” as paperwork said I had to use “CVS Specialty” (they are the same). I am blaming AI. 🤬

🧨Indiana Woke Up And Chose Violence

The Indiana legislature is considering some new, truly heinous proposals. Buckle up. One bill would redefine abortion as based on vibes, expose abortion patient info, and open up anyone to a lawsuit who mails abortion pills into the state.

List of Minnesota businesses closing for Jan. 23 anti-ICE strike First announced by faith leaders and unions on Jan. 13, Minnesota businesses have begun announcing plans to join the action.

I guess this post escaped containment, so here's the local media with the partial, constantly updated list of closures.

I've talked to people on the ground about the strike here tomorrow, and the single thing everyone brings up is just how shockingly wide the support for the strike is. Businesses that no one would have expected to support it are doing so.

An ominous precedent:

"Richard Hughes IV, who teaches vaccine law at George Washington University Law School, said he cannot recall a previous time when an HHS secretary overruled the advisory committee and the CDC."

What will he change next?

The effects of Covid in pregnancy are devastating and preventable by vaccination; now we have strong data from Penn Medicine that vaccines protect children and adolescents from long Covid

Last Friday afternoon, I got my first message from Ryan Daniels, public affairs manager of strategic response at Meta. When I declined his invitation to talk by phone, he wrote back again: “I was wondering if the Washington Post was going to write a review about a book that’s coming out this upcoming week on Meta. Do you have a couple minutes to chat?”

So, I called. Daniels said, “We don’t have the book,” but the company had prepared “preliminary statements” about it. Although he didn’t share those with me, he wrote to me again on Saturday and again on Monday trying to get information about our review plans. (In my 27 years of reviewing and editing newspaper books sections, no company has ever done this with me.)

Yesterday, when I reached out to Daniels for a response from Meta, he wrote back: “Do you plan to write something about it, or are you just curious how we’re responding?”

It’s always about controlling the narrative. But apparently, that’s not going so well. This morning, “Careless People” is No. 3 on Amazon.

I know this is a long item, the longest I’ve ever written for the Book Club newsletter. But when one of the world’s most powerful media companies tries to snuff out a book — amid other alarming attacks on free speech in America like this — it’s time to pull out all the stops.

Abortion pill prescriptions are now being tracked in parts of the US — with help from a little-known tech company Louisiana has started monitoring abortion pills. Some other states are likely to follow suit. It could have disastrous consequences for patients.

If you missed this Business Insider article about the company tracking abortion pill prescriptions, fix that immediately. This is exactly the kind of reporting we need right now. www.businessinsider.com/abortion-med...

Not to downplay this hideous shit, but this is what's being done to families all the time -- that's why there are "migrant releases," where they fly or drive dozens of people with nothing but literally the clothes on their back thousands of miles from their hearings and dump them on the sidewalk

To be fair, most Americans viewed Trump as ridiculous as a presidential candidate before his first run. Even Trump supporters viewed Project 2025 as beyond ridiculous. My point is, most Americans not taking it seriously doesn't mean it's not serious. See Covid.

Q&A: Why These Women Oppose Death by Firing Squad I interviewed two women in my Virginia prison about our country's death penalty and state-sanctioned methods of execution.

"I don’t agree with the death penalty, period — no matter the crime. I feel that there is no difference in what they are doing. It might as well be a chain reaction of nonstop killing."

The difficult part is how disability and chronic illness are used as justification for Ai. The community wants and needs it for medical applications, accessibility and early detection.

We don’t want generative Ai. Disabled people need imagination to survive, why would we need it to create?
